Mortal Kombat is a fighting game released in arcades in 1992 that almost immediately garnered notice for the violence of it.

But that was just the beginning, both of a global brand, and of the controversies and lawsuits surrounding Mortal Kombat.

Shoutout to my Grandmom for being cool as hell and buying me the first two SNES ports because, and I quote, “I let your father watch Bugs Bunny cartoons and he turned out fine.”

20:33 "parents wonder if kids can separate fantasy from the real thing..." Now all us 90's kids are watching our elderly parents getting brain washed by cable news and Facebook :-/

My Mother went to the mall during her lunch break on "Mortal Monday" to pick me up a copy at KB Toys. She knew the chances of acquiring one would be much more slim after work and school. Thanks Mom!

LESSON: No matter how humble the project seems in the beginning, assume it's gonna be a huge success and setup your contract accordingly.

Fun fact: "The Immortals" who made the Mortal Kombat album were none other that the ultra family-friendly techno pioneers, Lords of Acid.

Wait, cartoon bones? You mean they didn't photograph and digitize real bones to put in the game? Well that's my childhood ruined.

Mortal Monday was a glorious day to behold at 14...... God we really had it all back then... The future sucks... 😢

What you have to remember is... as grade school kids, WE didn't know MK was supposed to be funny. We just thought the violence was RADICAL!

So much madness around a game that looks so quaint now. I miss those days.

Nothing will ever beat the unmatched epicness of MK2. It was huge and glorious.

11:13 I appreciate the honesty here.
"This isn't really meant for kids, is it?"
"Actually it is."

11:22 "Oh my God, he just ripped his heart out!"

For us here - in the future - the interviewer's reactions feel so quaint. 😂

I'm 45 now and miss those days so much. What a time to be alive.

There was life before Mortal Kombat, then there was life after.

It was quite a thing, man.

I think Midway’s real victory with this game was creating the feeling that it was something forbidden, secretive, and rebellious. You knew that your parents didn’t approve and that was A-OK for teens.

I will eternally be grateful to Mortal Kombat and Midway for helping create the ESRB which basically kept finger-wagging mothers and politicians away from a great hobby falling into censorship.

Thanks for the reminder.

I remember going the arcade when I was 5 in '92. Because Mortal Kombat was new at the time, there was only me, my brother, and a few other kids playing, and taking turns. Fast forward to '95, Mortal Kombat 3 hits the arcade, and at this point the franchise is a global phenomenon. I remember waiting in HUGE lines just to play one match. Good times.

My first experience with Mortal Kombat was at a bowling alley in 92 (age 11) I was playing solo when a fella popped a quarter in and beat me mercilessly lol....and then proceeded to rip my head off with my spine hanging down....my mind was blown...and then i immediately looked around to see where my mom was to make sure she couldn't see what just occurred.

Just a couple of corrections:

- Midway wanted Van Damme for a Bloodsport adaptation, not Universal Soldier.

- Boon disliked how in other fighting games characters got dizzy DURING the match and then suggested to implement the mechanic at the end for the fatalities.
