Imagine living in the same home for 60 years, only to be told it could be demolished. Horden residents Ray and Moira (and friend Keith) aren't against regeneration, far from it, but they refuse to accept that progress means knocking down their houses.

In response to this film Durham County Council have commented:-

Tony Hanson, Durham County Council’s corporate director for regeneration, economy and growth, said: “We’re very ambitious about doing everything we can to make our council area a great place to live, work, visit and invest. That is why we have committed more than £10m, alongside the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, for regeneration in Horden.
“We want to help regenerate the village and improve quality of life for local people by tackling challenges such as the high number of empty properties in the Numbered Streets owned by absentee landlords. We have had several periods of consultation with local people over a number of years to get to where we are now.
“While we fully appreciate the very strong connections some people in the Numbered Streets understandably have with their homes; the external funding we have simply does not allow for the refurbishment of properties. Furthermore, refurbishment would not allow us to achieve the social and economic objectives of our Horden Masterplan.
“Overall, we believe demolition and replacement is the only achievable way of securing a higher standard of housing for the benefit of everybody.
“We want to work with residents in the Numbered Streets – to negotiate with them to buy their properties – offering fair market value and helping them access third party valuation; and to give them support if they want it in finding new homes, in whichever location they choose.”
