Great video Chris. I bought an Akto in 2005 and the reason I bought it then was you! These little bits of advice like keeping things together and putting the poles out of stomping, and pushing poles etc are all the important things you don't see newcomers to the outdoor world mention, yet they are so crucial. Loving watching you YouTubing after decades of reading your adventures and advice on books and magazines. 👍

Wonderful review. Love the attention to detail. High quality review of a high quality tent. New subscriber following that excellent assessment. Thank you Chris!

Thank you so much, Chris! You are the first person to me that explaines every bit of pitching the Akto. Your experience with the tent is very valuable and makes me realise that I have chosen the right tent for my future adventures. Bought it a year ago, testet the Akto in spring and unfortunately couldn't go further due to a severe disease of a family member. But there are lights on the horizon of 2026 that enable me to continue what I started on the outdoors.

Wonderful and enriching video, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Loved this thanks. My favourite tent. NW Scotland, Cairngorms, Skye, Gairloch, it’s never let me down ⛺️

I’ve had my Akto for almost 20 years and it still holds up as a single person, all year, all-rounder. Sure, it’s not ultralight, but it’s not heavy either. Couldn’t recommended it enough if someone was looking for a ‘one’ tent. Camped out in it in all conditions and it’s never let me down. If it ever did, I’d still buy another. Another great video Chris! Read all of your books (and even worked on one of them). An outdoors expert who’s opinions one can genuinely trust. Keep up the latest video feeds - they really are great! 👍

I love the porch space in the Akto and Enan.

Thanks Chris. Like others here, I bought my first Akto back in 2003 based on your reviews. It's been used countless times throughout the UK in all seasons, the Pyrenees, Alps, Slovenia, Iceland etc. and has never let me down. As you say Chris, it's the little things that add up to make the Akto so easy to use in the field, so that when I'm tired after a long and perhaps challenging day, I don't even have to think about any worries pitching this tent, it's just so easy. I always think that good gear should be 'invisible' from a user's point of view, and the Akto is just that - no worries in pitching or sitting out the worst weather.

I did use a similar design from a rival manufacturer, but that always let me down (I went through Four of them!), whether it be pole failures, zip failures or fabric failures. Also, those tents had small stuffsacs which look impressive in the shop, but are a pain in the real world. The oversized Hilleberg stuffsack makes packing away the Akto a doddle.

As the saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it.", and the Akto is such a good design that even after thirty years, I still think that if you needed just one tent from like you say, The Grand Canyon for example, to Snowshoeing in the Pyrenees or Scandinavia, Bank Holidays in the Lakes, whatever, the Akto is always a safe bet and still IMHO perhaps the best all-rounder?. The only alternative I would use is my MLD Duomid. Both are great, and I enjoy using them both!

Hilleberg has their own YouTube channel, and within that is a series of excellent interviews called Talking Tents with some inspiring adventurers.. Check 'em out!

I use the Hilleberg Enan mostly now, but I really, really look forward to using the Akto for arctic trips in Lapland in future. I can't afford the South Pole unfortunately!

Excellent video. Thank you Chris. Even better than the official videos on the Hilleberg website.

Chris what a great video very informative and so nice that you didn’t rush and took the time to explain things , you definitely should do more of these videos I have subscribed and look forward to your next video,

Thanks Chris. I've just acquired an Akto & I've found your videos & articles over the years extremely helpful in helping me make that choice. It was a toss up between the Akto & Scarp 1. In the end it came down to my personal preference for the simple robust design & reliable track record. Tony Hobbs had a big influence, but he's a bit mad & I needed a second opinion 😄.

100% agree with you Sir, If a tent manufacturer says you should use a separate footprint under the tent then that tent isn't fit for purpose and I will avoid it 👍🍺😎

I've always loved the Acto .The beauty of the tent is when its raining you can organise  and pack your rucksack don your waterproofs  disconnect  the inner and store dry then going outside drop the fly and store outside you rucksack in its storage bag with rucksack  straps and then start your walk drying the outer when the weather improves  😅

Great video, good to have a look around this tent ⛺️ interested in one of these 😊
Thanks for sharing

I’ve just bought an Akto and have pitched it once at home. Thank you for sharing your video on how you put it up, it was very interesting and useful. This is my 3rd Hilleberg and I have footprints for all of them. I like having fabric in the vestibule when you’re pitching on wet or potentially muddy ground. As Ive spent so much on the tent I want to protect the bottom of the inner. It was interesting to hear your experience. If you’re walking a long way every gram counts! Thanks

Great Video

Thank you..I have an Akto..Excellent video here!

I learned the lesson of pushing and not pulling the poles out the sleeve the hard way. Two sections came apart within the sleeve and I inadvertently let go, under tension from the internal bungee the two pole sections smacked together shearing the ends. Fortunately I had the small repair tube and some gaffer tape and fixing it for one more night worked ok.
Greatly looking forward to other videos in this series.

I have just bought this tent so this was a great video for me mate, thank you.

Great video Chris. Thank you. You are the reason I bought an Akto 12 years ago. It is a wonderful tent and exceptionally well made. Unfortunately at 6'3 I just found it to small especially in winter. I had the same issue with the Macpac Microlight. I am still on the hunt for the right winter 1 person tent for me. Thank you and really looking forward to this series on your tents choices. 😊

Thank you for the Video Chris.

I’ve owned 4 Acto’s.  The reason for that is not because the tents have failed.  Far from it. The build quality is excellent.  The problem I have is the style of tent.  There just isn’t enough room for me. But the fact I keep coming back to them is a testament to how good they are.

A footprint is certification that a tent is not fit for purpose.  Well said.
