Nigeria Needs 8 Regions, Not 17

The conversation around the regionalisation of Nigeria has reached a point where everyone needs to speak up and contribute to the debate. Recently, some wisemen came up with an idea of dividing Nigeria into 17 regions, which to me is a bit much, I think some of these regions may, like the current 36 states, not be self sustaining. I have come up with a to create 8 regions along cultural lines, as follows.

Region 1 - Hausania - this consists the 7 states in the NW zone, they are culturally and linguistically monolithic, except for some pockets of minorities like Southern Kaduna and Southern Kebbi who will decide if they want to stay in Hausania region or join either Niger or Benue region

Region 2: Yorubia - this consists the 6 states of the SW, it is also another monolithic zone with one culture and language. The peoples of Kwara state, Western Kogi and the ebiras of the Kogi central will decide which regions they want to stay with.

Region 3: Biafra - this consists of the 5 states of the SE, a culturally and linguistically monolithic region, the Anioma people of Delta North and the Ikwere people of Northern Rivers who have a linguistic link to the SE can choose in a referendum whether to join Biafra region or stay with either Bendel or Niger Delta Region

Region 4: Bornu - this consists of 5 states in the NE, the sixth state, Taraba will become part of the Middle Belt as they are majority Christians.

Region 5: Middle Belt - this should consists of Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa states, Kogi East and South Adamawa

Region 6: The Niger Belt- this should consists of Niger State, Southern part of Kaduna state, Northern Kebbi, and Northern Kwara, (the Nupes and the Ibarubas)

Region 7: Benin - This should consists of Edo and Delta state, the people of Anioma will decide whether they want to stay in this region or join Biafra region.

Region 8: Niger Delta - this should consists of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross river state, the people of Rivers North will decide if they want to join Biafra region

Igbos are spread accross 13 states and where only divided into those seperate regions after the civil war. You can be discussing “ethnolinguistics” and carving igbos into other regions! “Anioma” is not like Igbo, Anioma is igbo!

The British out of greed forced people together and that is how we all ended up in this corrosive mess. This “restructuring” foolery is doing the same thing? Why is it that NOBODY is talking about giving ALL THE DIFFERENT LINGUISTIC OR TRIBAL OR STATE OR WHATEVER the opportunity to CHOOSE FOR THEMSELVES where they belong? Why is that impossible? If Ikwerre people have a referendum and majority decide they don’t want to be with their Igbo kin, so ne it. If majority decide to be with their Igbo kin, so be it. The same goes for Ukwani, Opobo, Etche, etc. The same opportunity must also be given to every minority group in nigeria, so nobody tomorrow will claim you forced their people into a union they don’t want and then start a new conflict. Britain just exited the EU via a referendum. Why is it that our people can’t do the same for peace and harmony? Na curse dem curse us?????

This map on the thumbnail can never stand. I am Ikwerre man from the political name called Rivers State and we are Igbos. We will never allow anybody to cut us off from the mainland Igbos while Yoruba carefully draw their map to include all the Yoruba speakers in Nigeria. Indigenous Igbos are in 13 states so the boundary must be redraw to accommodate all Igbos down to Bonny and Opobo where my mother came from.

An elderly woman asked a young woman to find her a husband. Those who dared to isolate the Igbos, or even went so far as to divide them for their own good, were not labelled or regarded as greedy people, whereas I, who simply asked why. Similarly, those who founded Boko Haram – who kidnap, kill, rape and destroy farmland, people’s homes and churches on a daily basis – were not labelled terrorists, let alone imprisoned, whereas Mazi Namndi Kanu is in prison as a terrorist.

THE CORE OF RESTRUCTURING IS THE AUTONOMY OF THE REGIONS WITH REVENUE RATIOS OF REGION 80:20 FED.
THE 17 REGIONS BEING PROPOSED BY THE ABUJA-CCC, COULD JUST BE A STARTING POINT.
THERE SHOULD BE CLAUSE FOR SEPERATION/MERGER CLAUSE(S) IN FUTURE & ON-GOING.❤❤❤❤

So the whole restructuring being canvassed by Yorubas over the decades is to balkanize Igbo land into tiny, less viable regions. This is how black people stupidly set themselves up for endless wars. The wise thing Yorubas should have done is to focus on getting their people into one region. Trying to determine the boundary of other people is simply looking for trouble in areas they have no business.

A cultural map separates Igbos is not going to fly with the Igbos. We have Igbos in 13 states. The military decided to scatter Igbos in 13 states. During the Obansanjo reign Igbos that were separated by Imo River were moved into Rivers state against their will. The ika Igbos in Delta should be brought back to join the Igbos. During the war Igbos in rivers state and former Bendel state were told to deny they are Igbos so that they will not be killed. You remember the massacre of Igbos in Asaba during the war by Nigerian troops. After that killing everyone around there denied they were Igbos to stay alive.
