We used to visit Rhodesia to see the Zimbabwe Ruins. Now we visit Zimbabwe to see the Rhodesian Ruins.

In 1980 they were”liberated”from colonial rule, to be governed by a cruel and genocidal thug that left the population with far less rights than they had in Rhodesia.

everything was built when Rhodesia existed of course.

Makes me want to cry. Bulawayo was such a nice city, very clean and well manicured; it now looks tattered and dirty. Miss the old city.

Correction: Rhodesia was not a colony at the time of so called independence. Ian Smith's government declared UDI from the Commonwealth in 1965, making it an independent country. I was born in Bulawayo in 1968 and we fled to SA in 1981 as things began to get bad soon after elections. Sadly the country fell into ruins but trying to rewrite history does not help. Joshua Nkomo was a despot who should not be idolized, much like Mugabe should never have a street named after him. I notice that Nkomo's statue stands on the plinth that originally held the statue of Cecil John Rhodes.
I had to laugh at the comment that "some" of the rooms of the Selbourn Hotel can still be used, we used to lunch there often. Still it's quite clean looking and much like I remember it, just now filled with informal trade.
My dad use to work at the Power Station; it's not too expensive to run, no-one was left to maintain and operate it once the Whites left and it just fell apart. Western technology cannot be left in the hands of the ignorant.

Bulawayo looks like it has a potential to look nice again. If the buildings are painted properly, trash managed and roads and rail fixed... It will look like a beautiful city that it was in Rhodesia.

I'm a proud Rhodesian, and lived most of my life in Bulawayo. Once the bread basket of Africa to wreck and ruin!!!!

Tourists used to visit Rhodesia to see the ruins of Zimbabwe. Now they visit Zimbabwe to see the ruins of Rhodesia.

Rhodesia was the best thing that ever happened to Zimbabwe.

Bulawayo railway station was the railway hub of the whole region with the longest platforms in the world at one stage… pop over to the railway museum adjacent to the station, a very interesting outing seeing all thee old Rhodesian steam trains and Cecil Rhodes personal carriages .

I remember at a kid growing up in the 70's...our parents used to take us to the city wall on friday nights to watch wrestling.Wrestlers from all over the world would come and perform.On a saturday morning, as we would meet up with friends etc at the city hall

Bulawayo seems like a city I could move to if I were to move back to Zim. Very clean and beautiful. Harare is not as clean and a bit chaotic.

As a afrikaner with a Rhodesian uncle. This does sudden me. But all we can do is move forwards and try to make the best down here in SA and Zim. We as a people in Africa need to confront this corruption.
