"Depression is not about being stuck in sadness, it is about being stuck in a state of non-feeling." wow Heidi this is so insightful and blew my mind!
Thank you so much for this video. I really love your approach of being very grounded and ensuring we are honoring our bodies during these difficult times when it can feel so much easier to bypass and escape.
'How can I be the best worst version of myself' is brilliant. It reduces the anxiety of 'I have to be productive all of the time' and the stuckness of 'There is no point of even trying'.
I actually used your book “This is Me Letting You Go,” to grieve my recent break up. We were together two years and he was my first sober relationship and before we dated I thought I had healed - it turns out I just wasn’t dating so the stuff wasn’t coming up. Before I went to sleep I would read a chapter through tears. It helped me feel all the sadness, grief, anger, longing, separating, gratitude, love, friendship, joy, and everything in between without judging it or stuffing it down. I’m only a month and a half out of the relationship and while I still miss him dearly, I am also looking forward to what’s next. Feeling my feelings this way has helped me see a new depth of life that even when it hurts I can see the light. ❤
Seems like a useful exercise to imagine someone else doing your depression for you - gets it out of your body and de-personslizes the process so it feels less like an identity. In the past I have struggled with depression longer than necessary because I become overly identified with the feelings. Depression is what "I AM", not merely an adverse effect of a set of circumstances
“Depression can actually be our body’s resistance to sadness itself” interesting! For me depression is like there’s a guilt or shame blockage preventing me from accessing any of my feelings.
The crux for me when trying to get out of a depression is a chicken or the egg type dilemma-- say reflection leads me to consider quitting a job or ending a relationship, in a depressive state it is hard to tell whether taking action like this is responding to a truth that's coming up for me, disguised as depression, or if the depression is taking away my ability to enjoy current commitments in my life, scapegoating them even.
Haha bare minimum strategy was something I tried without realizing it was an actual protocol earlier this year and it worked wonders. Allowed me to laugh at myself as well.
I would reach out to my cousin who also experiences periodic depressive episodes and would tell him, "My only goals for the day are to brush my teeth, walk outside for half an hour, eat something, and shower." Once I did all of these, I found that I was able to continue on with a somewhat normal day.
One of my worst ever limerant-depressive episodes ended when I saw a video of someone enjoying life on their own. They were basejumping off a cliff while listening to a goofy song on a loud speaker. Just like your story of the cruise, it lifted me out of the well as I told myself to go do something fun.
Thank you Heidi for sharing your always amazing insights!
Thank you for this! It resonates a lot. I am a trafficking and ritual abuse survivor who was brought to a foreign country and while I have managed to make it onto support services here which offer some stability and time to digest which I have never had before, I feel so disconnected from my surroundings (I don’t speak the language and have been too dissociated to learn). I keep longing to return to my home country but when I check in with my body, I’m actually too tired to move right now. It’s constant practice refocusing on what the next thing my body is wanting to do is, which is be slow, take things one step at a time, and have time to grieve and write about the experience, rather than projecting myself into a fantasy future.
The video is such a serendipitous reflection of a recent decision to travel for a few weeks. Also not financially wise, but I haven’t felt joy in years and getting to be somewhere where I speak the language is the single thing that I can think of that would bring joy right now.
I’m always so impressed by the huge volume of personal experience and wisdom in your videos. You truly have a gift synthesizing and sharing helpful mental health and self care information ❤
Holy shit, that NLP hack is amazing. Listening to you tell someone how to be a depressed version of yourself while laughing to myself and nodding along like "Yup. Right there with you. Totally makes sense. Of course, my depression is just random. It has absolutely nothing to do with everything that's happening in my life and in the world, they're totally not related in any way whatsoever!"
Thank you. Going through a time of significantly diminished capacity. I have stepped down from working full-time to a part-time job and I needed to hear this, that it’s okay to let myself rest more and focus on healing my toxic shame and not “work, work, work” when my body is telling me we can’t right now.
