This might be cheap and dirty, but it is one of the best methods I have seen. Easy to work with materials, nothing exotic, and the final product looks amazing. Thank you for sharing this technique.

I recently "repaved" most of my layout using this foam. I like working with it.
One thing I began doing early in the process of landscaping my previous layout was to cover the top of the table with the brown paper bags from the grocery store, then doing all my landscaping, including road, one the grocery bags. I actually liked that gluing the grass and other ground cover tended to cause the bags to warp and bend a bit which made the ground uneven as ground often is. When I had to dismantle that layout for a move, I discovered the greatest advantage of using the paper bags, is that all the landscaping over the bags, including the roads, rails and ballast, would just lift off the table top nearly intact.

I've been modelling since I was 6 yrs old, after taking a break to join the army I am getting back into the hobby. Channels like this help new comers with the basics, and face it old dogs like me need to learn new tricks, after all if I knew everything I would be bored with the hobby.

I love 1mm craft foam for this purpose. I buy it in 1ftx4ft rolls off Amazon. Been using it for this purpose as well as all my road and parking lots for a good 5 years now. Thanks for sharing your techniques. I've never done the fold down, I will give it a go. -Dan in Portland, Maine.

This is a great idea - until not I didn't know you can buy 1mm or 2mm thick craft foam. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Great tutorial/method. You are correct with Code 83 you need 1mm foam, for Code 100, 2mm is fine. I couldn't find 1mm locally so ordered a bunch of black (asphalt) and gray (concrete) from Amazon. It is an incredibly easy method without all the sanding and fuss of spackling, plaster, etc. Subbed.
