I live in Southern Ontario, Canada.  Four years ago, I bought some hard neck garlic in the grocery store for making pasta sauce.  I bought way too much of it.  The sign said LOCALY GROWN, so I figured that I should be okay to grow it in my backyard.  Every single clove grew into a nice healthy head.  I didn't even do any mulching.  I just covered the bed with chicken wire mesh to prevent the squirrels from digging out the cloves.  Last year was the first time that I used straw to mulch it.  This summer my garlic heads came out bigger than the prior years.  Each year, I save the biggest heads for the next planting.  I no longer need to buy garlic.  I harvest enough to last me for the whole year.  Seeing how easy it is to grow garlic, this year for the first time, I also tried to grow Kelsea sweet onions from seeds.  They turned out fantastic.

Great information as usual, Crystal! Thanks.

I had no idea you lived in the same state, let alone the same zone as me. So thankful to finally find someone gardening and preserving that I can learn from in relation to where I live. I am loving your Freeze Fresh book I just got this week as well.

Walmarts doesn't sell fresh garlic because raw fresh garlic is more effective than the antibiotics in their pharmacy  because of the price difference.
For lymes disease and the flu it cures and combats symptoms.

So beautiful!

You are an awesome teacher. Very clear and concise. Love your social media. 😊

Zone 5 Iowa here 🙋‍♀️so happy to find this channel.

I usually add some worm castings and bone meal when I plant.

Hey neighbor!   Thanks a million.  Got my very first garlic cloves planted this fall because of your great tutorial.  Tell your folks I says hi!

We’re in Wisconsin too! I can’t wait for planting in a couple weeks ❤ Garlic is one of my favorite harvests.

I live in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada. I planted garlic two years ago and didn't get a good result. I think I planted it a little too deep, 3 to 4 inches, and in the spring, it was all underwater for a week or two. They grew, but didn't get very big, about an inch. Now I'm planting again, this time on the west side of my garage, and the soil is higher there, maybe 1.5 inches deep, and I'll put some old, rotted sheep manure on top. I'll also sprinkle straw on top, just as you explain and show here. I planted the Hard Neck Music garlic and hope for a good harvest in 2026.

I’m 3 years late on this. But thank you so much! You have a new subscriber! I’m in Wisconsin and I have been dreading starting garlic because I thought it was too difficult and I was worried about the snow.

Thanks to this, I’m definitely trying it this fall! Thank you!

We switched from hay to no mulch or mulching with Bio 360 to help warm the soil as soon as possible in the spring. We are in zone 4a at 1600 ft. in Northern NY. We plant at 4" and have had no problem with freezing of the cloves. The snow insulates well enough during the bitter cold weeks below zero.

You are well spoken, organized, and clear. It was a pleasure learning from you and Carl. Thank you!

Great! Thanks for the lesson!  I loved it!❤

We have been growing garlic for 10+ years now. We use landscape fabric which I cut holes in…we have found this to minimize weeds in the spring and early summer while growing.  Less weeding is always better!  We also put straw on…but the weeds are ferocious by us in sw Wisconsin.

Im zone 2-3 LOL wish me luck

You got to be a garlic, onion musroom lover in in north america and make some roast with that.

Thank you from New Brunswick Canada. This is my first time growing garlic and your video was very helpful
