I like cosplay because it’s an expression of art, I think this problem with “not making money from your hobby” isn’t just cosplay. Many people think hobbies are a waste of time if you don’t get money from it somehow. It’s kind of sad, but some people just think in money.

"You shouldn't wear cosplay as a disabled person because then people will avoid you or bully you" That is hands down THE worst cosplay advice I've ever heard, like oh my god. That's not even how that works that advice literally just exposes the ableism of the commentor

This whole mentality that a creative hobby is only "worth doing" if you can make some sort of profit off of it is so toxic and gross and UGH. There's more to life than making a profit all the damn time!

"i judge cosplay contests. i host cosplay contests" well not anymore !

i’m a baby cosplayer and went to my first ever convention last year even though my cosplay wasn’t amazing i still had so many people complimenting, asking for pictures and just being happy because they knew who i was cosplaying it was genuinely one of the most amazing experiences ive ever had and i adored meeting other people with the same interests as me

influencers HAVE ruined cosplay. i used to wanna cosplay and i enjoyed looking at people's cosplay but now it's all about the 'aesthetic' of it and not just the fun of dressing up and making costumes with whatever u got and being innovative about it. (at least on a mainstream scale, i'm not saying there aren't still people who make whatever costumes and have fun with it, but just like fandom stuff, anime, ao3 etc stuff being mainstream, it's all kind of been tainted by exposure instead of being niche quiet corners to be nerds (that a lot of us got bullied for liking and BEING nerds but now people profit off it)

“Cosplayers only compete for money/clout” if that were true I’d compete with medias like Hoyoverse, VIZ, etc. not niche horror rpgs from the 2010s 😭🙏 great video lee!!

"Don't cosplay if you're disabled" is the worst thing I've ever heard. Shame on that loser for even suggesting it.

From watching Sarah Spaceman's cosplay videos, a cosplay contest can either be craftsmanship or acting based. The cosplayers who make these detailed beautiful cosplay garments/armor/props/etc spend HOUR UPON HOURS into these cosplays meanwhile influencers will either commission one or buy something online for a tiktok video. I'd much rather look at the craftsman ship of a true cosplayer.

This kind of take from Stella Chuu is wild, considering she started at a time when contests were literally the only way to get recognized, and almost no one made any sort of profit from it, let alone a career 🤦‍♀ And as an older cosplayer myself, I actually think it's amazing that there are now so many ways to enjoy cosplay. Let people enjoy the hobby however the want ffs.

"Name a famous person whos won a contest."

Yaya? Sarah Spaceman?

I could go on

I'm just mad she's wearing a Rafayel from LADs sweater when his entire character is about making art to enjoy and feel and has even canonically burned his paintings to not make money. Like what the hell 😅

The cosplay community is anyone who likes cosplay. It's as simple as that for me. You don't need to be a social media influencer. You don't need to be in contests. You can literally buy your cosplay off Amazon and just go to a con to meet friends and geek out. And you would be part of the community. Heck, you can just get clothing from your closet; it doesn't matter. We all like the same thing. Why do we have to argue about it and not just enjoy the art?

@RuletheWorldwithsong 5 months ago

There were a few things I didn’t like from that interview. Saying that competitive cosplayers aren’t part of the community is obvious but inkwell has made a few videos talking about how bad AI art is and how it’s being sold at conventions and then in this interview Stella says that she doesn’t really care about Ai cosplay and inkwell just nodded his head. Shows that he was just making the videos because he knew it would get him views.
Inkwells comments of “they didn’t pick me to win in a contest because I was an original character” and “I looked around and knew my work was far better than anyone else here” feels like he’s a sore loser and hates competitive cosplayers

My favorite moments in cosplay are when a small child will come up and just be astounded that their character is in front of them. That just makes my entire life. I am finding people who actually know what D.Gray-Man is.

'Why do we turn hobby into something for money?' BECAUSE OF CAPITALISM.

@christinec.3260 5 months ago

I would be one of those "nobody" cosplay contest winners. I recently got first place in my category and I got second place in an overall competition at another con. I have around 90 followers on Instagram. I've also been cosplaying since 2008 and when I first came into it, making your own stuff was a HUGE deal. I disagreed with people that would gatekeep though, because I also started out buying my costumes. It took almost a decade to have the skills to make my own stuff. I'm proud of that, and it's the reason I do contests. I don't get why people have to make everything about popularity or social status.

Remember when cosplay was just about having fun?😭 I hate influencers so much omg

As someone who has been cosplaying since '08, I'm fairly certain it was never a job back then either. It still isn't. I respect those who are able to end up making a career out of it (soft dream, I won't deny!). People can do stuff just for the fun of it, for the enjoyment and happiness. But, let's be honest. Out of all the people who cosplay, the 1-2% are the ones who have been able to quit their day job for cosplay.
