There’s a tool for that.. great video

I have had great luck using one of my masonry chisels that I flattened the blade on. I place the blade just off-center from left or right(depending on tightening, or loosening) at a slight angle while tapping lightly with a 16oz hammer. Works like a charm every time.......just as long as there is some resemblance to a slot left on the face of the threaded plug.

So glad I found this video. I have an oil leak on the flywheel side and I want to take them out. Thanks for sharing!!

Over thirty years ago I bought a Drag Link socket for that job. It fits the original slot and is a 1/2" square drive so you can do the job in the car. 12-14 bucks on amazon today

Very informative!  A job I haven't done yet.  Talking front and back on VW engines gets so confusing. LOL.  I usually try to stick with here and there.  I'm waiting on the promised engine build video.

Front is front.  The front of everything on a VW is always located toward the front of the car.  The front of the engine is where the flywheel is.  Not the back.  The crank pulley end of the engine is the back of the engine.  Yes, when looking at the installed engine from behind it, you may say that's the front of the engine, but the front of the engine is the part that you cannot see.  It's the part that's nearer the front of the car.

Also, if you get an old church key (and hacksaw off the end that has the triangular part for opening milk cans, not the end for opening beer bottle caps), then file it a little to make it square, this is a homemade tool that fits perfectly into the OEM screw caps for the oil pressure/relief valves.  I insert this tool into the slot, then grab the church key body with vice grips, and turn.  Always works for me.  Easy peasy.

Good idea about the hex screw covers, Slade.  They make life easier.

Vice grips is how I got mine off when I replaced it with a new oil temp sensor on my bug. I'm guessing those German engineers had a special tool in mind when they came up with that slot. The allen head is one thing the after-market got right!

all is good using a air hammer on low air pressure

I use a soft faced hammer and hit the top a couple of times.
This will squash the metal seal ring a bit making removal a little easier.

I think snap-on makes or did, a 3/8 screw driver socket, that fits the oe screws. The vise grip tip, works well. 👍
