In 1999, Parma had one of the greatest squads in European football.

Gianluigi Buffon. Fabio Cannavaro. Lilian Thuram. Juan Sebastián Verón. Hernán Crespo.

This was a club that had never even played in Serie A until 1990. Within a decade, Parma were winning trophies in Italy and across Europe, challenging Juventus for the title and assembling a team filled with future legends.

Then everything collapsed.

The Parmalat scandal shattered the financial empire behind Parma's incredible rise. The superstars left, the money disappeared and years of instability eventually pushed the club to breaking point.

In 2015, Parma went bankrupt.

One of the great clubs of 1990s Italian football was forced to start again in Serie D — the fourth tier.

What followed was one of the most remarkable comebacks in football history.

This is the story of Parma: from Nevio Scala and the glory years, to Buffon, Cannavaro, Thuram, Crespo and the UEFA Cup triumphs; from financial disaster and bankruptcy to three consecutive promotions and an extraordinary return to Serie A.

From European glory to the fourth division — and all the way back.
