In 2013, Catania finished eighth in Serie A.

With players like Alejandro “Papu” Gómez, Gonzalo Bergessio and Francesco Lodi, the Sicilian club had established itself in Italy's top flight and appeared to be dreaming of an even bigger future.

Then everything collapsed.

Just two years later, Catania became engulfed in a match-fixing scandal. President Antonino Pulvirenti admitted paying money to influence matches, the club was demoted to Italy's third tier, and years of financial instability followed.

In December 2021, Calcio Catania was declared bankrupt.

By April 2022, the club had been expelled from Serie C altogether. After more than 75 years, Calcio Catania was gone.

But Catania's supporters weren't.

Backed by Australian-Sicilian businessman Ross Pelligra, a new club was created and forced to begin again in Serie D — the fourth tier of Italian football.

What followed was an extraordinary resurrection.

This is the story of Catania: from the famous days of Serie A and the packed Stadio Angelo Massimino, through scandal, relegation and bankruptcy, to the rebirth of football in one of Sicily's great football cities.

From Serie A to extinction — and back from the dead.
