Wow, now I know I was born a Genuine Aerospace Youthful Subscriber.

This game is EA telling people "oh you don't want live service? Well here you go a game that shall receive zero post launch content." And then use it as an excuse to say "see, see, nobody wants a single player experience."

They literally had the X-Wing series and the Rogue Squadron series to learn from, both of which can still greatly entertain to this day, and they made this

I wish I could just stay playing campaign for the Empire instead of getting switched back and forth between faction for every other mission, its just annoying

Still playing X-Wing Alliance in 2026.

A big part of this game’s failure that you forgot, was that Star Wars: Squadrons had its release sandwiched between a titan in this genre, being Ace Combat, with their release Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown a year earlier, with campaign DLCs coming out around the time Squadrons came out. And Squadrons was immediately followed two months later by a new face in that Genre that was able to live up to Ace Combat, Project Wingman.

Anybody who actually cared about aircraft combat games was already going to be on either Ace Combat 7, or was going to be playing Project Wingman very soon after Squadrons came out.

On top of that, when Squadrons came out, the general consensus was that “this feels like a Battlefront 2 add on rather than its own game” due to lack of content.

Squadrons was kinda screwed from the start.

I actually replayed star wars squadrons recently. It was fun for what it was but after about a week, I finished the story and had my fill of single player (multiplayer is basically dead) the game just doesn't have a lot of staying power, which is unfortunate considering its the best pvp star wars dogfighting game out there

Holy shit... 6 years ago, that's crazy, I had the sensation of buying this game 3 years ago MAX.

0:20 Brooo, that scared tf outta me!

This game needed more single player/PvE modes. Give us a Historical Battles mode where you can relive legendary battles like the Battle of Endor or the Attack on the Death Star!

I personally did enjoy it a lot but the fact that there was basically no single player modes and it consisted entirely of a PvP focus turned me away from it after I completed the main campaign

I still don't regret buying mind you, still revisit it from time to time because I love these kinds of games. It's just a shame it's practically deserted

It was a fun game, but barely much to do.

The classic X-Wing series had something Squadrons didn't: Memorable missions that make you feel like you're really a part of what is going on. That's something this game fails really hard at. It feels more like a theme park ride.

Dusted off my VR1 and jumped back in the cockpit.

My X-wing love will never die.  May yours live on.

Definitely should have added the first Death Star battle, Battle Of Yavin. That would be very cool.

I have vague memories of reading that the game was essentially not planned to have anything more.  I recall (but could be flat wrong) that they were up front on only having a couple of major updates plans, balancing passes, etc.  There don't seem to have been any plans for expansion.  I'd call it maybe a passion project/experiment for the team.  But it wasn't designed to revitalize the genre/lead to a ton of new flight sim based sci-fi stuff.  IT just kinda existed.  Made back it's budget, was a decent game.  Never itnended to be anything beyond that.  So (from my perspective) they always planned for it to be very limited in scope

kinda surprised nobody cracked the engine open and started creating mods for it. seems like a bunch of single player missions would have been an obvious way to keep it alive.

I still play Squadrons. It is amazing in VR.

I remember all the victories I scored with my buddies in a discord call playing the Reaper/U-wing and being the tanky support and having a blast keeping my squad alive

In VR, this game is insane. The two scenes early on where you have the slow start up of a TIE and an X-Wing gave me the biggest grin on my face.

Both stories are interesting to me but seeing the Imperial Remnant from a front-line perspective is very cool. Very much "The Last Tiger" vibe from BF V. This massive machine of war reduced to narrow minded territorial squabbles while a few core leaders try and hold things together.

Its not the time period, its how shallow the game was.  Xwing, Tiefighter, XvT, and Alliance a still hold up fine.  Rogue Squadron is still loved as well.

I grewup on those games when DOS was the OS.  The first 2 were on DOS the others on Windows 95 and later.
