Illegal mining in South Africa is at a crisis point. Rival gangs are fighting for control of the country’s untapped gold reserves, fuelling an underground economy worth billions. Crackdowns often lead to violent confrontations, while corrupt officials and powerful syndicates profit from the chaos. Beyond Borders is on the trail of the so-called Zama Zamas, as they are hunted by police, to uncover their high-risk underground world - and ask whether the government is guilty of using inhumane tactics to stop them.
