1.) Both his best friend and his aunt died.
2.) The rocky horror show wasn't a school play (thankfully lol) just local theater that a lot of the highschool kids participate in.
3.) It takes place in the early 90's in Pittsburgh.

28:15 his aunt got into a car accident and his friend committed

In the book, Charlie is slowly remembering that his Aunt touched him. He repressed/blacked out the memories because they were too much for such a young mind to process. Once you know what he’s been through, it makes sense why he struggled so much with telling  people like Mary no and why he struggled to express his love for Sam. The entire movie, he can’t put himself first. His aunt was extremely mentally ill/traumatized and probably put a lot of pressure on him to “comfort” her. So he does that with other people now by not thinking about his needs first. Really sad and incredibly realistic.
This movie and Mysterious Skin are probably two of the best representation of childhood assault. I love this movie so much

Beautiful movie, beautiful reaction, beautiful discussions. Perfect way to start my week! Much love from the east coast!

love this reaction your both such empathetic people love this reaction

So when Charlie asks the teacher “why do good people choose the wrong people to love” and the teacher tells him “we accept the love we think we deserve” Charlie is referring to Sam, his aunt, and his sister.
Also, his aunt died in a car crash when he was little, and his friend committed more recently to the time the movie takes place. The reason the movie starts off with Charlie writing a letter to someone called “friend” is because his therapist told him to write letters to the friend that took his life, to try and help him grieve and work through it.
The term “wallflower” is not what that group of friends calls themselves, it’s an actual word that refers to someone who is very shy and introverted, and stays on the sidelines but notices things and understands people deeply.
I hope that helped clear a few things up 🤗

Fun fact: the author is the director and thank god too bc no one would direct this better than he can and apparently in the book Charlie’s pov or the way he speaks is broken but it could be how he’s wired post trauma growing up

That cafeteria scene where Charlie saves Patrick, is my favorite of the movie. There was always a trope "don't mess with the quiet kid," and Charlie handles it. Its a very gangster ass scene. He runs up, scowls, black screen and then the aftermath. It shows 3 guys nursing wounds in pure shock and they were scared. Charlie 3v1 to save his friend and delivers a true bad ass line, "touch my friend again and I'll blind you."   He did say typical teenage shit like; "i'll k*ll you," "I'll whoop your ass" or "I'll beat the f*ck out of you." No,... (in a relatively calm voice) he tells them the last thing they will ever see again is the image of him turning their sight into a thing of the past. Bad ass way to show love, get respect, and scare everyone in the process. Love it!!!

Yea him narrating us him writing to his friend who passed and that’s why he says he saved him and was his only friend as they grew up together, and then sadly he was gone bc he had an alcoholic for a dad and Charlie felt alone, and when he’s alone and doesn’t have his friends to help him he spirals into darkness and the flashbacks come back to him which drives him to the brink of madness hence the scene where he considers going out the way his friend did and right as police pull up thankfully

In some ways a comfort movie for me and one of my all time favorites, esp relating to being a wallflower and a quiet kid who’s angry in school “never mess with quiet kids” they say

Such an amazing movie to portray these people

He would never lie about his friend passing bc that’s literally an insane thing to lie about and usually when your under the influence you’re spewing truth bombs and his friend was his crutch growing up while his aunt was a lonely woman who had bad luck with men so she was wired to be abusive as well and unfortunately to young Charlie

I literally only ever heard about this movie 3 days ago. What a coincidence

Love yall reactions ❤ this movie is a special one ❤

Such a great movie. That ending reveal between him and his aunt hurts every time. 😞

I am glad you pick rare gems. I hope you watch ''Manchester by the Sea'' some day.

You’re gonna love this

This movie is sooo good!

I haven’t read the book but I assume he’s writing to his friend that he lost about his life and how he got where he is now, so yes he did lose ain’t Helen and his best friend. All before high school is crazy and it’s him blacking out or in denial so he can forget what he went thru. And having Sam nd Patrick helped him immensely like they literally saved him so he saved Patrick back and that’s how important they are to him esp after losing his friend and how much he related to Sam

Omg thank you for reacting to this movie, it’s so good!
