Why the Sith STOPPED Using Academies for Training Apprentices

The Stupendous Wave

Step inside the Sith Academy on Korriban and discover what daily life was really like for Darth Bane and the apprentices of the ancient Sith. Using Star Wars Legends sources, primarily Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, this video explores the brutal training, lightsaber combat, Force instruction, rivalries, Sith philosophy, and ruthless culture that shaped future Dark Lords. We also examine how Darth Bane rejected the academy system after destroying the Brotherhood of Darkness, replacing it with the Rule of Two and a far more demanding style of apprenticeship through Darth Zannah. If you’ve ever wondered how the Sith were trained, why they abandoned academies, or what separated Sith education from the Jedi Order, this is the complete Legends breakdown.

Little is spoken about the other hurdles of training on Korriban. Whilst dealing with horrific tombs, bloodthirsty creatures, rival acolytes and sadistic overseers, one had to channel their Force abilities to drown out the incessant guild recruitment shouts and whispers.

The sith of Bane's order have forgotten that they serve the dark side and not the other way around. When Darth Plagueis tried to command the force to his will, the force created Anakin to bring the force back into balance.

The main problem with the Rule of Two is how fragile a structure it is. If a master dies by mishap w/o passing on their knowledge of an apprentice power and knowledge is lost. Sam happens if the Master goes nuts e.g. Darth Gravid and decides to burn his library of Sith knowledge. Plus, as the last few generations of RO2 Sith showed that temptation to become Rule of 1 is just too great.

Bane was right about the old Sith Orders’ weaknesses, but he misjudged it’s strengths at the same time. Numbers can carry a strength all their own. In the end, Bane’s Sith Order simply traded one weakness for another.

Bane's philosophy never solved the issue of what the Sith should do after destroying the Jedi.

The fact is the academies worked well under a structure where the Sith had enough apprentices to train for it it be logistically superior. It fostered competition, and if we compare this to the bioware depictions of the Sith Academy under Vitiate's/Tenebre's empire we can also see that it was only really intended as a filter and a method of basic instruction. Much like the Jedi temples teaching the younglings in groups but segregating padawons for individual instruction it taught groups of acolytes who would then compete to gain individual apprenticeships to a master. Those masters might have a handful of apprentices but likely no more than 2-3 still being actively tutored. Though of course the acolytes were older and had a much much lower graduation rate, thus the fierce competition.

One of the strengths of the academy system is that if the talents/strengths of the student is different than that of one of the teachers, odds are good that there is at least one teacher who is better equipped to teach those strengths to the student, which isn't the case for the master/apprentice system, which you could see with Bane and Zannah, considering the latter was naturally talented with Sith Sorcery, which Bane as not.

I think Darth Bane was right in his way of doing things, as it lead to the near complete victory for the Sith nearly 1000 year later.
I only would have liked to see what it would look like if they had gotten their total victory.
With the Ultimate step of it being Darth Vader reaching his full potential and overthrowing Darth Sidious to become the new Dark Lord, and becoming the thing Darth Maul feared in his nightmares.
Instead of the Penultimate step of Darth Sidiours' almost victory over the Jedi.
Could you pretty please make a What If video about this topic?

You should make a Sith gauntlet where you have some Jedi go against Darth Krayts Sith Order.😅

I enjoyed reading banes trilogy. It was refreshing to see a sith not focused ont heir own personal power but the sith as a whole. After all the whole reason he learned essence transfer was because he was worried Zannah may never challenge him and he wanted time to find a suitable apprentice.

Out side the general problems with the Rule of Two, I'd say a problem with Bane's system is it assumes too much out the door for what an Apprentice can do before actually receiving training. I think is view of the Brotherhood's Academies stopped him from considering WHY they were there since the old days. There was a reason that, at least for the first few years, Sith trained at under a more traditional school like setting. You needed to first know what the baseline is, so you can then push them past it. Under Bane's style you could have the best possible Apprentice, but without first knowing where their strengths and weaknesses are, you can too easily push them too hard or not hard enough out the gate and ruin all of it. Over time, I think the Baneite Sith would somewhat improve on this, but as a foundation it sets up many of the fore-mentioned problems of the Rule of Two as a whole.

I think what made bane stand out was that he held the crucible that forges power above power itself, that is, the dark side. This is what makes banes philosophy closest to the original sith since vitiate.
I think exar was in it for powers sake entirely and didnt particularly care if the sith went on without him like bane did.
I think Banes only failure is that he failed to establish or even recognize that there was a singular required trait for an apprentice and thats that the rule of 2 demands they are willing to raise another above them in service of the crucible.
When plagius decided he and palpatine were the last the balance was disrupted and anakin was concieved.
to me this is the proof that revans true intention was balance with the rule of two; meant to keep both the jedi and sith as servants of the respective duality of the force.
