Why do we reach for our phones when we're bored, lonely or overwhelmed, even when we know there's something more important we want to do?

In this episode, I’m joined by Nir Eyal to explore why we get distracted, what’s really driving our impulses, and how we can become more intentional with our time and attention.

Nir explains why the opposite of distraction isn’t focus, but traction - being pulled towards the life you actually want, rather than away from it. We explore why distraction is often driven by internal triggers such as boredom, anxiety, loneliness and fatigue, and why the problem may not be your phone or technology at all.

Nir shares his four-step framework for becoming ‘indistractable’, including how to master internal triggers, make time for traction, manage external triggers and prevent distraction with simple pacts. He also explains his 10-minute rule for managing impulses and why planning your time can be more powerful than relying on willpower.

We also discuss children and technology, including the three psychological needs every child has: competency, autonomy and relatedness. Nir explains why children may turn to screens when these needs aren't being met offline, and why understanding the underlying need can be more useful than simply blaming the technology.

At the heart of the conversation is a simple idea: becoming ‘indistractable’ isn't about eliminating technology or never getting distracted. It's about having the agency to decide how you spend your finite time, according to your own values.

If you've ever felt pulled away from the life you want to be living, struggled with your attention, or wondered why you keep reaching for your phone, this conversation offers a practical way to think differently about distraction, and what you can do about it.
