I believe that Prince Philip convinced the boys, to walk behind the casket. I think that the boys were to young.

Perhaps they should not have been allowed to make the walk.

They were MADE to walk because the Royal family knew that they had made a major mistake about how they handled Diana's death - and the boys were used as the barrier between the people's feelings - and the anger they felt towards the coldness felt at the Windsor's trying to down play Diana - THE PEOPLE"S PRINCESS and her tragic death.
