Legend has it that Noël Coward stated that he had not formally "come out" or publicised his homosexuality because, "There are still a few old ladies in Worthing who don't know".

None of these men exactly hid their sexuality. The idea that anyone had any doubts about Noel Coward is ridiculous.

The vast majority of these actors were known to be homosexual at the time. Nothing new here !

Dirk Bogarde was known to be gay in the 50s. He was usually referred to as a 'confirmed bachelor.'

It was no secret about Kenneth Williams or Charles Hawtrey it was obvious to everyone they were both as camp as Christmas..

Almost every one of these actors were well known to be gay fairly early in their careers, with the possible exceptions of Olivier, Bogarde, and Redgrave.

Wikipedia is somewhat confusing, in Nigel Hawthorne's bio, they state that his partner died a few weeks prior to NH, but in Trevor Bentham's bio, they say he died last year, having eventually settled into a new relationship after mourning Nigel for some years.
I would suggest that the latter is more likely

Don't forget: homosexualtity was illegal in the UK until 1967 - in Scotland until 1980 and in Northern Ireland until 1982.

I cannot resist: When discussing Nigel Hawthorne, the narration informs us that when Trevor Bentham, Hawthorne's partner, died in 2002, Hawthorne grieved openly. And seconds later, we learned that Hawthorne died in 2001. So some posthumous grieving from Nigel. (And, in fact, Bentham died in 2025.)
