My wife is Chinese and her family can’t speak English, her parents are the best inlaws I can ask for. I’m trying to learn mandarin so I can communicate with them better.

When I started learning Japanese, I thought Chinese characters (Hanzi) were difficult — but then I found that they are actually simple. The hard part was remembering how to use them in Japanese. So I thought, why not try Chinese? A single meaning for each character seemed easy. In the end, I came to understand: characters are simple. Japanese is simple if you learn characters along with words (in context). Chinese is complicated — but not because of the characters — because of the tones.

And here’s what I realized:
Japanese starts to feel simple after you learn two alphabets and around 100 kanji with words.
Chinese starts to feel simple if you spend a lot of time training your ear and practicing tones quickly. For me, it’s something you need to practice a lot at the beginning to make the next steps smoother.

I’m just 13 and I’m going to china and settle with parents this is very helpful, I hope china is the place where all my bitter past come to an end. I’ve gone through so many things for a teen boy, I guess china will end it all and I will live happily with my family

Now I see why they say that it's almost impossible to understand Chinese singing. I mean I understood conceptually, but when you described the pinyin tonal markings, I looked at the pinyin vs the tones they were using in the music and the music forces them to constantly stray from the tonal markings. THANK YOU FOR THIS INSIGHT.

Wishing everyone who sees this a great journey learning the language! I moved to Shenzhen a month ago from London to be an English teacher to grade 1 and 2. Kinda hard when I can't speak Chinese! Thanks for the great video!
