Grand Canyon Railway, Williams Arizona, Route 66, and the Grand Canyon South Rim — in this video we ride the historic train from Williams to the Grand Canyon to see if this iconic Arizona experience is really worth the price.

Williams, Arizona is one of the best preserved towns on Historic Route 66, filled with classic neon signs, vintage gas stations, murals, and old west charm. We spend the evening exploring the town before boarding the Grand Canyon Railway, a historic train that has been taking passengers from Williams to the South Rim since 1901.

We ride in the Mary Colter Luxury Dome Car, enjoy breakfast and champagne on the train, experience live music and even a staged Old West train robbery along the way.

Once we arrive at Grand Canyon National Park, and meet up with our friend ‪@MarkCormier‬, we visit iconic locations including Bright Angel Trail, Bright Angel Lodge, Lookout Studio, and the historic El Tovar Hotel. We even walk part of the Bright Angel Trail and revisit the exact spot where we first saw the Grand Canyon 20 years ago.

But the big question is: Is the Grand Canyon Railway worth it? After spending more than $500 on tickets, we give you our honest opinion and tips if you're planning to do this trip yourself.

Thank you for sharing your adventure. It was enjoyable to watch from start to finish. Forty years ago we drove from NY to the Grand Canyon to propose to my wife. She said Yes! Twenty-five years later I took my son to the Canyon to show him the spot on Bright Angel Trail where I proposed to his mom. My wife and I are still together and we still have the old Chevy in our garage that we drove there with in 1986. Thanks for the wonderful memories.

Robert - I think Williams is probably the best part of Route 66 so far. It's sad to see so many abandoned structures along the Route.

I've done the Grand Canyon in every way possible, including the train. By far the greatest experience was a hike down on the Kaibab trail and the river raft out through the best part of the canyon, includeing a short hike up Havasu Creek, the most beautiful area in the canyon. I'll send you a short albulm of phtos and videos from the trip.

Thanks for taking us along, Robert. It's always nice seeing the Grand Canyon. I'm glad you enjoyed it but, though I love trains and the canyon, that close seating and entertainment/robbery is enough for me not to take that train trip. If I want music, I'll put on headphones. If I want entertainment, I'll go to a theater. For me, that should be a peaceful, contemplative venue to enjoy the surrounding nature. And I agree with you about staying overnight. Safe travels!

Did that same trip 20yrs ago with my son. Stayed at the canyon over night. The next morning it was 8 degrees F. Oh it was two days after new year and a dusting of snow.

I feel the same way. It was VERY expensive to take the luxury train ride. Would I do it again? No. But I’m glad that I did. It is a once in a lifetime experience. I could have done without the train robbery skit, it was kind of lame. But it is what it is.

Back in early ‘80s , before I-40 bypassed Williams, you could drive down Main Street with hardly a Route 66 tourist trap. My How times have changed!

The hotels run about $400 per night at the south rim. I know cause I’ve stayed there for several nights. It is amazing to wake up to the view each day! I will say that!
