Simei's Four Beauties Murals — History, Legend, and One That Made Me Stop

I went down to Simei to find all 8 paintings — the Four Beauties of ancient China, scattered across 4 streets, two murals per street. What I found was a fascinating slice of Singapore history hidden in HDB void decks.

The Story Behind the Murals

Simei (四美) literally means "Four Beauties" in Chinese. Back in the 1980s, the streets were originally named after these legendary women — Xishi, Diaochan, Zhaojun, and Guifei Roads — before being renamed to Simei Streets 1 to 4 in 1987 because non-Chinese residents found the names too difficult to pronounce. The murals were painted in 1987, each costing $800, and they're now the only reminder of this forgotten naming chapter.

The Four Beauties:

· Xishi (西施) — Spring and Autumn period. Said to be so beautiful that fish forgot how to swim and sank. Her name inspired the Shih Tzu dog breed. Murals at Block 116 and 123, Simei Street 1.

· Diaochan (貂蝉) — Three Kingdoms era. Likely a fictional character from Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Legend says the moon paled in comparison to her beauty. Mural at Block 146, Simei Street 2.

· Wang Zhaojun (王昭君) — Han Dynasty. A concubine so stunning that birds fell from the sky at the sight of her. She was also skilled in pipa, Go, calligraphy, and painting. Mural at Block 226, Simei Street 4.

· Yang Guifei (杨贵妃) — Tang Dynasty imperial consort. Said to put all flowers to shame. Mural at Block 107, Simei Street 1 (Street 3 in some sources).

Together they inspired the idiom "沉鱼落雁,闭月羞花" — "sinks fish and fells birds, eclipses the moon and shames flowers."

One Painting Felt Off

I visited every single mural. Seven of them fit the legend — elegant, colorful, traditional. But one looked genuinely wrong. The colors were there, but something about it felt off. Creepy, even. I pulled out my EMF meter and got a spike. I can't say for certain if it was interference from nearby devices or something else. All I know is that painting did not feel right.
