Five Divers Took the Wrong Turn at 190 Feet. None Came Out.

Five experienced divers entered a flooded coral cave near Alimathaa Island
in the Maldives.

None of them came back.

The cave reaches nearly 190 feet below the Indian Ocean. Inside, two openings
looked similar enough that investigators now believe the group may have
mistaken a dead-end tunnel for the way out.

Then the recovery operation claimed another life.

A Maldivian military diver entered the cave to bring the missing divers back.
He died from decompression sickness.

Days later, a specialist Finnish cave-diving team arrived with the equipment
and gas required for an operation this deep. They found the four remaining
bodies in less than three hours.

But the biggest questions remain unanswered.

What happened to the five divers in the darkness?
Did oxygen toxicity, nitrogen narcosis, or rapidly running out of gas play
a role?
Why did they enter a cave at nearly 60 meters without the specialist support
that was available nearby?

And one of the divers, Monica Montefalcone, reportedly filmed every dive she
made.

If that camera survived, it may contain the missing timeline of what happened
inside the cave.

This is the story of the Maldives cave tragedy of May 2026.
