It’s the 10th of May 1980, Hampden Park.

Celtic and Rangers had just contested the Scottish Cup Final. After a tense match, Celtic won 1 nil in extra time. But when the final whistle sounded, the football stopped mattering.

Supporters poured onto the pitch from both ends of the stadium. Fighting broke out. Bottles and cans were thrown. Mounted police moved onto the field as officers struggled to regain control.

By the end of the day, more than 200 people had been arrested and around 100 were reported injured.

The violence helped prompt legislation later that year restricting alcohol at designated Scottish football grounds. Those restrictions remain broadly in place today.

But the riot was not where the Old Firm rivalry began. It was the result of a century of history.

So how did Celtic and Rangers become such bitter rivals?

In this video, we’ll explore the origins of the Old Firm derby, the moments that intensified it, its most iconic matches, and how it became one of the most intense rivalries in world football.
