Oh I hope you see this because it'll save you so much time and effort.

The fastest way to get seeds off sunflowers: Grab a bicycle. Turn the bike upside down. Turn the pedal so the wheel spins. Press the sunflower head into the spokes while they spin. The seeds fly off as the spokes hit them. Each head takes about 20 seconds to do.

I used to feed my hens sunflower seeds all the time until I saw a video about how chickens can get Fatty Liver Hemmorhagic Syndrome from eating too many. I will feed them sparingly now knowing this.

One of my favorite thing about this video is how you shared what you were learning as you learned it! Very interesting!!

As a Japanese enjoying watching your videos, I was surprised that you guys went to an asian country and learn about food and more!
I loved how you guys were so open minded😊
Some people just judge asian (or fermented) foods because of smell or different ingredients that they're not used to.

Thanks so much for another great garden post. You gave me so much inspiration to get out and about of my garden. Thanks for sharing those beautiful sunflowers with us too. Oh my gosh you’re inspiring me to get busy. See you next week my dear

The easiest way I've found to harvest the seeds from a sunflower head is to rub them against a grate that has holes big enough for the seeds to fall through. Once I've harvested the seeds I clean up the head of the sunflower and cook it by either roasting or sauteing it. The flavor is similar to artichoke hearts :)

Have you thought to grow some comfrey and feed the green comfrey to the chickens to supplement during the growing season? Also, if you have Japanese beetles in your area, you can purchase beetle traps, do not use the attractant chemical, sprinkle sugar water in the bag. You can feed the beetles straight up but you can also freeze them for winter feeding. High in protein.

Leaf footed bugs are highly attracted to sunflowers. I plant them as a lure/trap crop to reduce their numbers and the damage they cause to my tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants

Grilling the heads before the seeds harden is aces

Chickens love the sunflower leaves too! We cut down the entire stalk and toss it in!

no one of us is judging you!👐 you dont have to be perfect!

Sprouting sunflowers is quick (1 day soak, 2 days max in warm damp tote)... And the improved digestibility and small green leaves are almost twice as nutritious for chickens

I recommend you to follow to traditional Romanian way of processing small batches, if you let them completelydry they last longer and taste better. Next year just let them dry on field, then remove them when they are completely dry (brown stem and leaves). Place the sunflower heads on a clean large tarp and use some thick sticks to beat them well until all seeds are falling off. After that you can just store them in a closed container. Enjoy!

A scraper works best for getting the seeds out

Homesteading, or farming, is so much work, isn't it! Wow, what a task you've set for yourselves! Thanks for sharing the journey.

Thanks so much for some great information about growing sunflowers and how you harvest the sunflower seeds

Note that the appearance size and taste of the saved seed are not indicative of the genetics of the embryo, they're indicative of the mother plant. So you could have delicious large seeds from a mammoth plant that were pollinated by a small, bland sunflower, and those seeds end up being a medium sized, mild tasting plant.

Self reliance not sufficiency which means to just survive -- the attitude should be abundance, prosperity, thriving

I think it says a lot about how bad the typical US food industry is, when you feel sick every time you eat something from it. I don't think it's the food itself but the chemicals, growing hormones in the meat, the GMO-grains that are inside it. I don't know if you had the same problems when you were in France some years ago, but when I was in the US I felt sick after just one meal when I feel totally normal when I am at home in Germany or in pretty much any other European country.

Your manure sifter is exactly like what my husband built me for a cooling rack. I love them because it fits my counter perfectly and holds multiple trays of cookies. Also they can be stacked because of the depth of the wood.
