I appreciate the fact that instead of interrupting every 30 seconds, you let the song breathe.

I agree 💯. The song is best first, but the next step is watching the video. The video dramatically impacts the story. Together they are "One"

Orion probably will be appreciated the most with anyone with Classical background. Has such a good classical structure and flow.

The song will make you think. The video will make you cry. It's a masterpiece.

You should definitely watch their official music video.

Oooooo you're the first reactor that did this song properly. Album version first. Now you need to watch the music video for it. It goes from "moving" to emotionally devastating

I love that you listened to the album first, just like all us old folks did back in the day. This song was inspired by a movie called Johnny Got His Gun, which describes the horrors of a man who lost his arms, legs, sight, hearing, and ability to speak due to injuries from fighting in WWI. Metallica actually purchased the rights to the movie to make the video. You should really watch the official video for further context.

The song is based on the novel/movie “Johnnie Got His Gun”. The video for this was Metallica’s first ever video and it contains clips from the movie. Metallica Antony bought the rights to the movie so they could make the video.

To Live Is To Die will make you cry

As a callous young man, this song taught me empathy. It was the first song to make me cry.

And Justice For All is a heavy metal masterpiece.

Metallica has a few great instrumentals that you ought to listen to. "Orion," "Call of ktulu," and "To Live is to die.""

They're some of Metallicas' best and most beautiful.

Christina, I love your content so much. A classical musician who knows theory and has an open mind, with an intelligent understanding of lyrics and a measured response to what you hear. Much respect.
This song was based on a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun." It's about a World War I solider who loses his arms, legs, sight, hearing and ability to speak because of an explosion. He's reduced to and is trapped in his own private world (hell) of "one," alive but alone in the silence of his mind. It's a real masterpiece.
Anyway, thanks again and keep up the good work!

The inspiration for the song is the book and movie Johnny Got His Gun (portions of which are heavily featured in the music video everyone is suggesting you watch). The book is written in a stream-of-consciousness style where the main character has no orientation of his place in life due to being left no limbs, and losing most of his senses. It's intended to be a treatise on the absolute futility of war, its undeserved nobility, and the need to be eradicated.

Watching the official video makes the whole picture more clear

If you love the unforgiven and their classical influences, then "fade to black" is an absolute MUST listen. From their second album "ride the lightning".

80s Metallica have some incredible songs referring to war, One & Disposable Heroes are top tier masterpieces.

To Live Is To Die is a must listen, it’s the most underappreciated masterpiece in rock history.

@busted-ravioli 3 weeks ago

Ive listened to this song literally hundreds of times and it always hits me hard.

@Rayidrs 1 year ago

"To live is to die" is one of their best pieces ever.. Its an instrumental that hits you very hard with lots of emotions, especially when you learn the backstory.
