The first Korean who actually won the gold medal on the olympic marathons was Sohn Kee Jeung on 1936, but as a result of brutal imperialism of Japan, Korea was a colony of Japan back then so it was recorded as Japan's medal.
Sohn was in deep sorrow on the day he won the gold, as he felt ashamed of himself to win a medal for Japan who invaded his home country and killed millions of innocent people - you can find Sohn's photo on the medal stand, looking down to the ground and trying to hide the Japanese flag on the chest of his uniform.
One of Korea's biggest newspaper company at the time also intentionally deleted the Japanese flag on the uniform when introducing that photo, and later had to close the business by the force of Japanese government as a result.
The rest is history - Japan lost on WW2, and Korea achieved independence on 1945.
And on this video,
Hwang won the gold for South Korea after 56 years from that very moment when Sohn won the gold for Japan, running ahead of Japanese runner on his back, on the stadium where Sohn was watching with tears - but this time with tears of joy.
This still is the best drama I've ever seen on olympic games.
