Why A Link to the Past Is Still The Legend of Zelda's Most Important Story

Triforce Times

Before A Link to the Past even really begins, Hyrule is already a place shaped by centuries of forgotten secrets and buried disasters. And that’s something the game never outright explains — it just drops you into this quiet little house in the middle of a storm. But behind that small, intimate beginning is a world that’s been living in the shadow of a legend for so long that most people have stopped believing it ever happened.

It was a dark and stormy night, and the voice in my head was telling me I couldn't trust the government.

A Link To The Past is criminally underrated when it comes to lore & story. Ahead of it's time when it comes to video game lore imo!

ALttP is a perfect example of guiding the player without Handholding

I think it's kinda funny how Lorule and the Dark World are basically the same gameplay-wise but entirely different lore-wise.

LttP Link stands out for never catching a break. His story begins abruptly with a decision that, however irrational, would've been unconscionable to avoid, and he's practically on the run from that point. Unlike those who came later, his "tutorial" is no place of comfort and safety; it's breaking and entering Hyrule Castle, escaping only by virtue of it's sworn protectors, trained and hardened soldiers, having their wits addled by sorcery. And it only gets worse from there.
It's a wonder that his wish upon the Triforce, after slaying the demigod responsible for reshaping an entire world, was not simply to sleep.

Thank you for recording this in 4:3 instead of weirdly stretching it.

My first entry into the series. I rented it and the person before had a file with almost everything unlocked. As a young kid I thought you just wandered the world and killed the evil soldiers. It wasn’t until my parents bought it for me years later that I realized you start in his house that rainy night with absolutely nothing lol

Tunic did an incredible job of capturing the magic of link to the past and the 16 bit era. Anyone who hasn’t played it needs to immediately.

This was my first Zelda game back in the late 90s when I had to live with my grandparents as an infant. My uncle who was still a kid then, had an N64 and the Super Nintendo. The number of hours I'd spend playing this absolutely enamored with everything, from the colors, the characters, the sounds, everything about this game is a core memory to me. Truly is the best 2D Zelda game ever made.

This is my favorite entry in the whole entire series . Back in the day it felt like a grand adventure and still is to this day . A flawless masterpiece really I could go on and on about it but I won’t lol . How I wish I could relive playing it for the very first time back in the early 90s just such a great feeling.

A Link to the Past and the stories before it would make a very good book series.

32 years later, I learn there is a "magical boomerang'.

LoTP is perhaps the most important game in the franchise from creating the lore to the structure that following games would follow for decades to come.

i love your thumbnail images, very reminiscent of the kind of art you'd see in nes-era nintendo power

The story definitely felt like it hasn't been talked about enough. People praise the ones like OoT, WW and TP more than this one. It was this story that even gave us the strongest version of Ganon to date with him having the full Triforce, the trident and a whole realm to call his own.
