THE STORY BEHIND THE TRACKS

1. KARIYA – LET ME LOVE YOU FOR TONIGHT
Released by Sleeping Bag Records in 1988, Kariya's debut single became a transatlantic club favourite and returned to the UK chart in 1989. Its warm vocal, rolling bass and hip-house edge made it a natural bridge between New York club music and the emerging UK rave generation.

2. CECE PENISTON – FINALLY
CeCe Peniston's 1991 debut grew from club anthem to worldwide pop hit, reaching No. 5 in the US and No. 2 in the UK after its 1992 reissue. The piano riff, gospel-powered vocal and instantly recognisable chorus turned it into one of house music's great celebration records.

3. TEN CITY – MY PEACE OF HEAVEN
Released in 1992, this was Ten City at their most uplifting: Byron Stingily's falsetto carried by the soulful Chicago-house sound the group developed with producer Marshall Jefferson. It captures the gospel, disco and communal spirit that made Ten City such an important vocal-house act.

4. SHAWN CHRISTOPHER – ANOTHER SLEEPLESS NIGHT
Written and produced by Mike “Hitman” Wilson, this 1990 release reached No. 1 on Billboard's US dance chart in early 1991. Shawn Christopher's huge Chicago vocal and the record's dramatic strings helped push house toward a more melodic, song-led sound.

5. MAW PRESENTS INDIA – TO BE IN LOVE
Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez and “Little” Louie Vega released this Masters At Work production with India in 1997. India's passionate performance over MAW's fluid percussion and Latin-soul musicianship made it a defining example of sophisticated New York vocal house.

6. JULIET ROBERTS – CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE
Originally issued in 1993 on Cooltempo, Juliet Roberts' self-penned vocal-house powerhouse topped both the US dance chart and the UK dance chart. Its mixture of soul belting, piano lift and club drive kept it alive through a successful 1994 reissue.

7. FARLEY 'JACKMASTER' FUNK feat. JESSIE SAUNDERS – LOVE CAN'T TURN AROUND
Born from Chicago's first wave and the lineage of Isaac Hayes' “I Can't Turn Around”, the record crossed from underground clubs into the UK Top 10 in 1986. That breakthrough helped announce house music to a mass British audience and remains one of the genre's pivotal moments.

8. ADONIS – NO WAY BACK
Adonis made this stark, hypnotic Chicago classic as a teenager, and Trax Records released it in 1986. Its stripped-back drum-machine pressure, dark bassline and relentless repetition became a cornerstone of house and a key influence on the acid-house generation.

9. CRYSTAL WATERS – GYPSY WOMAN (LA DA DEE)
Produced by Baltimore's Basement Boys and released in 1991, “Gypsy Woman” paired one of dance music's most unforgettable hooks with lyrics about homelessness. It reached No. 8 in the US and No. 2 in the UK, proving that an underground house groove could become a global pop record without losing its edge.

10. JOE SMOOTH – PROMISED LAND
Released on D.J. International in 1987, Joe Smooth's anthem featured lead vocals from Anthony Thomas and a message of unity, dignity and hope. Its emotional power travelled far beyond Chicago, inspired a version by The Style Council and still sounds like house music's promise of a better dancefloor.
