The mysterious scenery of the deep sea that unfolds when you descend deep in a submersible
An in-depth exploration of the deep-sea ecosystem, from the characteristics of deep-sea creatures to survival secrets
Did Earth's first life originate in the deep sea? The deep-sea's hot spot, hydrothermal vents
An underwater treasure trove? Why deep-sea biological resources are so precious
In this episode, MC Defconn meets Professor Lee Dae-han of the Department of Life Sciences at Sungkyunkwan University, Professor Jang Hong-je of the Department of Chemistry at Kwangwoon University, and science communicator Hangseong, Dr. Kim Dong-seong, Director of the Jeju Research Institute at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST). Together, they unravel all the mysteries surrounding the deep sea, an unknown world that everyone has wondered about at least once.
There is a place that is familiar to us, yet as difficult to reach as space?! The deep sea—a dark and deep ocean where even sunlight does not reach! Join Dr. Kim Dong-sung in exploring the mysterious world of the deep sea, filled with secrets yet to be revealed.
“Is there a sea monster like the Kraken in the deep ocean?!” In response to Defcon’s quirky yet somewhat persuasive question, Dr. Kim Dong-sung explains, “The Kraken is a being created by the fear of the unfamiliar space of the deep sea,” and reveals images of actual deep-sea creatures he has personally prepared. Just how different are the images of deep-sea creatures we imagine from their reality?
Could the first life on Earth have originated in the deep sea? The ‘hydrothermal vent theory’ is considered a leading hypothesis regarding the origin of life on Earth. When deep-sea hydrothermal vents were discovered in 1977, the scientific community was reportedly engulfed in shock. Biologist Professor Lee Dae-han states, “The source of energy for the Earth’s ecosystem that we knew was the sun,” adding, “The possibility that the chemosynthetic system emerged before the sun-based photosynthetic system was a tremendous shock to biologists.” In particular, when it was revealed that the site where hydrothermal vents were first discovered was near the Galapagos Islands, known as the birthplace of Darwin's theory of evolution, the cast members were reportedly left speechless for a while.
After much deliberation, Dr. Kim Dong-sung unveiled a video for the first time. Stating that "if you actually see the scene, you will come to believe in the hydrothermal origin theory," he revealed various deep-sea footage filmed by his research team. Among them, he presented a shocking scene captured at a hydrothermal vent, declaring, "This video is being revealed for the first time." The true nature of that scene, which instantly froze the studio, is about to be revealed.
