Man that CLIMB CLIMB CLIMB gave me chills - glad they landed it safely

As a U.S airline pilot I really have no idea why we are so averse to saying “MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY” in this country.

It makes very clear to everyone that it’s serious and you need immediate action. No time for BS. No time for repeating yourself 10 times.

Take charge and tell ATC what you’re going to do, or what you need to do. You’re not asking permission. You’re not really being “controlled” anymore at that point. You’re in control, and ATC is just there to help you get it done. If ATC gives you instructions you can’t comply with, the magical phrase is “UNABLE”.

If my aircraft is on fire I’m basically pointing the nose at the nearest practical runway and landing on it. No delay vectors, no sequencing, no lolly gagging. Send everyone else around. Sorry if I end up shutting down the airport and causing others to divert, I’ll send you a post card and I’ll send a Tiffs Treats to the control tower. AFTER we get the damn airplane on the ground safely.

Smoke in the cockpit ought to be an automatic Mayday.

This is another perfect example of why in an emergency situation, you don’t ask ATC you tell ATC.

From "we have smoke in the cockpit" to "whatever runway you need you're clear to land" took under 20 seconds. Those ATC are FAST.

He wasn’t sent away. He was given immediate clearance, but he missed his lineup and had to go back around listen to the transcripts.

smoke in the cockpit? No problem we will give you a tour a NYC before vectoring you to land.

Pilots that watch this... Brief your emergency plan before every single departure.  And be smart.  Leaving LGA, Set up landing in ewr or jfk.  Get the plane ready and your mind ready before it happens.  It only takes an extra minute or two.

Terrifying when you hear a stressed voice trying to speak over "terrain" alerts. Jesus.

Basically threw the whole airport at the pilot…who probably couldn’t see shite

The controller cleared them to land on any runway.  They overshot the runway and had to continue to set up for the landing.  The pilots are responsible for getting the plane on the ground safely,  they have to do whatever it takes to make the landing, the controller was giving them vectors to help them get configured, they didn’t seem to be in a position initially to land on the original runway.  She let them work out what they needed to do and they landed safely.  She did a good job to me and it worked out well.  People are always trying to act like they would have done a better job but no one knows what they would do if they were in the same situation.

Not a Pilot but do Agree with the viewers comment about pilots who hesitate to alert a "Mayday". Great Job by this ATC.

Smoke means fire and fire means “Mayday” X 3 and land now! The PIC owns the sky and the airport after the Mayday call.

I kept yelling at the screen, "Turn him in!!!"

Why on earth did they hand them over knowing they had smoke in the cockpit,
instead of just giving them a 180 turn and vectors to the airfield?

1:11 At least they had decent ATC, clearing all runways in under a minute!

Why's everyone mad at ATC? ATC immediately said cleared to land any runway you want.
