I love seeing two men punching each other in their faces and laughing, in my opionion this is one of the real beauties of life

Thanks for having me!!

Glad to see you and Kevin collabing since he couldn’t make USDC!

You know it's a good spar when both sides are giggling like schoolchildren on a sugar rush

The more I study martial arts, the more I see the similarities. Osu🙏

Interesting point about the punching motion being similar to sword fighting. Old school British pugilism (progenitor of modern boxing) has a lot of footwork from fencing and it was common for fighters to stand with their “strong side” or right hand and leg forward as if they were still holding a sword.

Also, Savate (French kickboxing) directly developed from fencing after the French king outlawed dueling with swords. I’ve heard Savate translated as “foot fencing” and the stance and footwork is directly from rapier fencing.

Bruce Lee’s famous right foot forward stance and lead side kick with that right leg is straight out of Savate.

Wing Chun has similarities to old school pugilism being bareknuckle in how they strike and where.  Back in the day people didnt strike to the head as much aiming for the body and soft tissue areas.   The same goes for Karate.  Those fights where often battles of attrition where the fights would go on for long brutal periods rather then ending up in quick knockouts.  Because of this style of fighting clinching, trapping, grappling became a requirement that WC specialized in.    The devleopment of gloves changed how we fight.

Essentially, all southern Chinese martial arts originated from the dual-wielding sabre techniques employed by maritime combatants during the Ming and Qing dynasties (14th to 19th centuries). Consequently, these techniques are rather ineffective in hand-to-hand combat situations. Ryukyu-te shares many similarities with southern chinese martial arts, while karate has evolved into a martial art that is more suited to the requirements of modern combat sports.

Well, Wing Chun may surprise an opponent with quick and invisible punches, though kicks int stomach could make it even more surprising. But it is nice to see that Wing Chun is not an ossified fighting method and its adepts draw conclusions from other martial arts. Good work !

All martial arts are useful for self defense. Period. If this art for example trains you to effectively punch  from a very close range, it would absolutely come in handy (pun unintended) under certain self-defense scenarios.

Super interesting striking at close range.

Hopefully Kevin is in season 4 of USDC.

I’ve always found wing Chung fascinating. Ideas of grip fighting into striking in that claustrophobic space.

Not sure whether it was Jesee (Karate Nerd) who said but, loved the analogy of all the martial arts meeting up at mountain top, but starting from different sides

You both have fast hands!

Kevin's lack of range & wing chuns style got Kevin taking face punches. Kevin definitely needs to kick to level the playing field

5:36 that part about parrying is very interesting. That instead of pushing down where the opponent will still have some form of leverage to come around the parry, you push into the elbow bend instead. Which will make it harder to slip out and counter. Very good stuff kevin!

Let me just say that, on average, sure Asian men or East Asian men to be exact in this context don't tend to be very tall or big but that at the same time is also a generalisation. There are also a number of taller and bigger Asian guys around. You need move out of your bubble and take a walk around the world more. Simultaneously, i have seen a number of white people, or Europeans and Americans. They are bigger on average but not all of them are that big. I literally came across a British guy and another European guy shorter and leaner than myself, and another American guy who is as tall as me and yet lighter than me. So yeah. Size varies with regions and individuals of an ethnic group or nation, so on.

This was my first martial art which I studied . very scientific just like traditional Muaythai and Silat

Nice video. I trained in Wing Chun for 14 years and I would say, if someone throws one or two heavy, committed punches at very close range…..WC comes in to its own……anything else from a more mobile, non-committal striker (jabs, feints etc) then box and/or kick….you HAVE to move - your feet and your head

I did karate for like 20 years and i did also some aikido, jiu jitsu, so i think i know a litlle about this. When i saw these guys like fighting, there was no too much difference betwen the styles they represent and this is what think  - when it comes to something real, everybody regardless how he is trained is fighting very similar, then it depends who is faster os more cleverer.
