It wasn't because they were unusually diligent that people in the Joseon Dynasty went to bed as soon as the sun went down. The Gyeongguk Daejeon (Grand Code for State Administration) prescribed different numbers of lashes for violators of the nighttime curfew depending on the time of night, forming a symmetrical curve that peaked right at midnight. Through surviving historical records, we explore how Joseon's nights were actually closed—and to whom they remained open.
