I’ve tried a lot of generators over the years… learned the hard way 😅 This one actually works. What do you use at your cabin - solar, generator, or both?

I had a Honda EU 3000 for over 10 years and lived off grid with it charging batteries on a regular basis. Running at 80% load roughly 5 to 10 hours per week! I left it out in the sun and the rain for over 10 years and it never once gave me a problem. Then my friends suffered from one of the wildfires so I donated it to them with the condition that when they are done they give it to the next person who needs it and it is never to be sold. The generator is now 14 years old and a little old lady passed a photograph of her and the generator and requested that it be sent back to me with a big thank you. So cool!  I am a Honda fan for life!

I own a honda 2200 EU for just about  20 years and use it to power my camp.  It’s probably the most reliable piece of equipment that I’ve owned.  I regularly change the oil and I always run ethanol free fuel in it.   I got a great deal on a brand new honda a few years ago thinking that my original would eventually crap out…it’s still sitting in the box.

Good advice, inverter generators have several advantages over conventional generators. One thing everyone should know, it’s not really the sine wave distortion, which zaps electronics, it is voltage spikes created when you unplug a heavy load or switch something on and off. A conventional generator has voltage spikes, but an inverter generator has none. This is the main reason why inverter generators are safer for electronics. If you don’t have an inverter generator, be careful about switching heavy loads on and off when you have electronics connected.  Sometimes I will add a small electric heater to create baseload on my conventional generator so it reduces the voltage spikes that may occur.

Honda makes a beast of a generator, but for the price you could buy 3 of cheaper units so it’s a little silly putting that kinda cash into one basket especially when the other option lasted 6 years for you.

My first generator was an EU 3000i.  I bought it 8 years ago and it still runs like a champ. I keep it stored indoors with no gas, then get it ready for our camping trips.

Great advice. I have been using Honda generators for 30 years. I have the 2200i and the 3000i. Both over 15 years old. Never an issue and reliable. I live in a Hurricane affected area and depend on it.

I really liked you saying which generator you recommend at the beginning and then telling us why you do recommend it and then letting us know which ones you don't recommend.

Have a Honda 5000-watt generator ( 1983 ) that is in my shed and runs like new. Just start it every month or two to exercise it just add gas.
Purchased the Honda EU2200i about five years ago ( new never gased it up ) for a back-up because my 5000 is 42 years old . Purchased the 6 gallon auxillary tank for it to get extra run time.
Now I have 7 solar generators and charge them in about one hour with the gas Honda.
Every time a solar generator was 50% off, I would buy one now I have seven. Ready for a prolonged power outage.
My AC/DC converter died on my Dometic freezer, and now powering it pass-through with my EcoFlow 1000-watt solar generator. Works great!

Champion 3500 w gas generator.

Champion 3500w gas generator. 11 years old. Sitting in garage, unused for 4 years .Drained old gas from tank. Carb was empty (gas lever was in off position).Put new fuel in and it started on one pull. Runs like a champ. Absolutely amazing. Gonna do oil change now.

Yes the Honda Inverter Gen 2200i has been a game changer for me. But when I changed my Batteries 3 years ago from AGMs to 2x200Ah LifePo4 on my liveaboard boat, I noticed that my Honda was working full bore to charge the Lithium. But its still running fine, because I change the Oil regularly, it doesn't take much oil. I usually change it every month as it turns a dark colour. If you want your Honda to last change the oil.

When i moved off-grid, i got a powermate 2200i from walmart. A month earlier my neighbor got the (at the time) equivalent to the same Honda in this video. Both sounded nearly identical with his actuallybeing slightly sharper sounding, had quite a number of the same parts (though they were arranged differently) and fuel efficiency was virtually identical. The first break down actually came from the Honda, though my powermate only beat it by a week or 2 as i remember and they both had the same number of problems, usually the ssme problems before eventually dying completely. To be fair, this neighborhood is extremely hard on generators.
Someone lent me Yamaha's equivalent and it was incredible. Noticeably quieter, lasted 2 hours longer on the same amount of fuel and ran dependably come hell or high water.
ATM i have a Yamaha EF3000is on lay away that i got a huge discount on and am planning to pay it off in October when we get our PFDs (the money Alaskans get from the oil company every year. Unfortunately, that huge discount was given because Yamaha stopped making generators. So if you want one, get it now or forever hold your peace.
I agree that Hondas are good for what they are and they probably are the best in production now that Yamaha bowed out, but i personally wouldn't trade a Yamaha for 3 Hondas. That's my personal take.

The Honda is a fantastic generator. One thing I’ll point out is, it’s important to understand how long you can run these things (ALL generators) continuously. VERY important not to exceed the manufacturer’s specs. Great video!

Good to know about the Honda.  I just bought the 2200i after a 4 day power outage at my cottage in Ontario. I only need to power my electronics, a fan if it's hot outside, and an electric kettle for a few minutes to heat water. I don't even need to power my hot water tank for showers because I just use a solar shower.  If the sun isn't out I use lake water, add some boiling water from the kettle to get it a comfortable temperature and hook it up in my shower inside the cottage. It does the job very well.  I am just breaking the generator in now and tested it with a couple of appliances.  Seems to run great.

Of course Honda is the best that 62 years old after awning generators dirt bikes, power washers, cars you name it Honda is the best. I left a power washer in the shed for 22 years. I emptied the gas out when I put it in there one day I took it out of the shed put gas in it. Put the choke on turn the gas on you guessed it. It started on the first pull. Honda is unbelievably good !!!!!!
