Crystal Lake Is NOT a Prequel | Friday the 13th Timelines Explained

There’s a lot of confusion surrounding the timeline of the new Crystal Lake series, especially because it takes place several years before the events of Friday the 13th.

But Crystal Lake is NOT a straightforward prequel to the original 1980 movie.

Jason Voorhees was originally born in 1946, but the new series has moved his birth year to 1960, completely shifting the Friday the 13th timeline forward.

In this video, I break down exactly what that means, why the dates no longer need to match the original movies, and why Crystal Lake should be viewed as a new continuity rather than a direct prequel.

It's basically a reimagining of Friday the 13th, similar to what they did with Bates Motel being a reimagining of Psycho

The way I choose to look at it is through the lens of a Multiverse: The Original Paramount Timeline, the Newline Cinema branch, and the 2009 Remake/New alternate Earth. This new series is its own universe which will likely have carry-over elements from the other continuities that are universal certainties when it comes to Jason, with perhaps a similar or a different course from the original events. I am interested to see what the show has in store.

They did say that their plans for Crystal Lake is for each season to be an adaptation of each movie a while back. We’re getting a prequel/adaptation of Friday 1 here. Season 2 could either be the main events of Friday 1 or Friday 2.

Finally someone with some common sense. They deliberately used the term "prequel" during early development to bait and lure viewers, hiding the fact that this is actually a complete remake/re-imagining of the story. Studios know that fans hate remakes about 95% of the time because they usually feel like lazy cash grabs. By slapping the "prequel" label on it initially, they managed to build massive hype and trick people into expecting a clean backstory tied to the original films, all while secretly rewriting the entire timeline to fit their new 1971 setting. I've even seen people try to link this series to even Jason Goes to Hell for some reason which is just laughable. If they're completely retconning the entire original movie then they're certainly not gonna acknowledge a trash pile of a movie in the franchise that should've never been made in the first place. With that said, calling Crystal Lake a "prequel" is like saying Bates Motel from 2013 was a prequel to Psycho. I've even read comments from people who still believe that by the way, and they still can't explain how Marion Crane got resurrected from the dead and went from looking like Janet Leigh to a black woman in Rihanna.

Saw the first 2 episodes at Toronto Film Festival last night. It was absolutely excellent! Stays true to the OG but has much better acting and writing and production. The films are great and this is just as awesome. It actually DOES do some of the plot points in the films too and instead of 1958 Jason drowns in the early 70's. Don't worry, you'll love it when you see it. Respects the franchise completely

I feel like this is gonna be like a bates motel kind of deal were this project will service as a prequel to it’s own (modernization) of the Friday the 13th narrative which is a good thing if you ask me.

I could see it being like bates motel, where it started off as a prequel but ended as a remake of the first movie and was by far the best thing psycho has produced since the first movie though the second one was actually kinda interesting take as a sequel.

Basically go bates motel style and i will love the hell out of this show. Besides i could dig a few seasons of sackhead jason seeing as the mask is locked behind legal issues.

You have to wonder why they changed the dates. Only thing I can think of is they wanted to set the show in the 70s instead of late 50s. I suppose it is still possible to line up with events of the movies. Jason would be 24yrs for the events of Friday part 2 his first time out. Where as in the original timeline he was 38. 24yrs seems just as believable to me if they decided to tie it in with the films.

I worry that this show will be jumping through several timelines, which I cannot stand. It such a common trope in episodic story telling now, that it really makes it hard to invest time in. It tries to outsmart the audience, all while patting us on the back for tolerating the '3 steps forward, two steps back' narrative.
