How Halloween Accidentally Ruined Its Own Villain

Wolfman's Got Nards

Michael Myers was terrifying in the original Halloween because nobody could fully explain him. But across Halloween II, Halloween 5, The Curse of Michael Myers, H20, Resurrection and the Rob Zombie remakes, the franchise kept changing what made The Shape frightening.

In this video, I look at the moments that stripped away his mystery, and why David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy gave audiences something to wonder about again.

When do you think the Halloween franchise changed Michael Myers for the worse?

Michael's mystery is far more unsettling than any explanation.

I don't think Michael Myers was ruined until Halloween ENDS. 💯

There’s Halloween and then everything else. All of them, including Halloween II, are significant steps down from the original.

There was never a need for a sequel. As much as I love them in their charming awfulness they’re pointless.

Michael Myers in Halloween is perfectly in the uncanny valley. The more Loomis talks, and the more we see Myers actions you start asking uneasy questions about this “man”. It’s perfectly unnerving and any explanation lessens Myers. 🎃

The ending of the original film is perfection. Nothing that followed matched it, and I don't believe that's even possible.

I won't say that I haven't enjoyed a good number of the sequels but Halloween should never have had any continuation. All the sequels did was cheapen that iconic ending.

I been saying that for years barry! The scariest thing about michael was the complete lack of reason and pure randomness. Why me? For absolutely no reason at all...it just sucks to be you today

H2 is a fantastic continuation of the story. It adds to it. Besides, it's kind of a moot point because neither Michael nor Laurie would've had any idea who each other were whether they were siblings or not hecause Michael went to the institution when he was 6 years old and Laurie wouldve been a baby at that time, then a Strode.
Nobody complained until blowhard John Carpenter complained. Both he and JLC will do anything for two nickels then shit all over it once the check clears........ 🎃

Hyped. 🎊 🎉Great perspective. I still have a certain love for Halloween 2, regardless of how they added the brother-sister thing.
But definitely agree that it was too explained in some sequels.
Love your handsome haircut buddy.

Sad to say, I actually liked the curse and cult explanation because it was the reason he survived all of the things he shouldn't have, like PAUL RUDD SMASHING HIS HEAD WITH A HELIUM TANK.
We didn't have to see the cult in action, and that could have been the psychiatrist's role in later films, to give that to us without showing US the cult in action.
Just me, I love Michael Myers, and I love a supernatural villain like that.

The Only Halloween that Ruined Michael Myers: it was Halloween Ends

Brevity is the soul of wit. One film. One story. Open ending. But no, instead we got "the higher the monkey climbs, the more you can see his arse!" Brilliant

Some people put the blame on HII, with the sister angle. I say Michael's character stayed mostly intact until H5. That movie derailed the franchise, and the character. It's like they were drunk while coming up with all that stuff. Such a ridiculous, sad, and also comical production. No regard whatsoever for what John Carpenter created or intended.

Yeah that abomination Halloween Ends definitely ruined Michael Myers turning him into a broken down old man living in the sewer with long covid. That movie is Hot Garbage

MM doesn’t need to be a big brute or physically imposing as his mystique is what makes him scary and unique. I love H2 1981 the twist makes no difference to me, it kind of made sense to an extent, which feeds into part 4-6 to an extent, then we jump back to H20 which again makes sense.

I did enjoy the fact H18 though also removed this and returned to mystique MM.

Hey Barry....i love any "Wolfman" halloween video 😊

The new trilogy always felt weird, to me.

This Laurie goes through less than the original timeline, het is far more damaged than her H20 counterpart, and the fact thst there isn't the moment when he chases her through the hospital just means there's even less reason for anyone to think that there's something about Laurie to base that "eternal struggle" kind of connection between them.

The sequels don't just ruin Michael, they diminish Laurie in significant ways, as well.

Objectively speaking H1 never needed a sequel but i do love most of the sequels even though none of them can live up to the original but i find most of the sequels good in their own way. I think michael's mystique and simplicity is what makes him timeless it also makes him a very fun character to see on the big screen from time to time

I like the idea of Michael just being a force of nature, and you really don't know why he kills. The Zombie films sucked and made me feel sorry for Michael, instead of being scared of him. But some of the squeals wrecked who he was as well.
