El Estepario Siberiano - Pneuma (TOOL) | His Hardest Cover Ever

Touchy Reactions

El Estepario Siberiano said Pneuma was the hardest, most complex cover he’s ever released. First time hearing it — guitar player in the room. We got lost in the time signatures.

Changing meters the whole way. Hypnotic. Learned beat for beat and played live. We kept shaking our heads trying to find “1.”

He said this was the hardest cover he’s ever done. We believe him.

Neither of us could lock the downbeat — those meter changes had us shaking our heads the whole way. Then it hits you: he learned Pneuma beat for beat and played it live.
Drummers, do you agree that this is the hardest cover he’s released or is there a tougher one?

It's nearly criminal to see this without checking Danny's performance of this live. I mean, it's just the most viewed drum camera performance ever on Youtube.

And to do it on a much smaller kit is INSANE!

not a drummer. I'm a guitarist. first odd meter song i learned was Kashmir. My next songs were all Tool after that: 46&2, Schism, Lateralus. Adam's parts aren't exactly technically hard, but the timings will force you to be disciplined when you play. It's incredible practice to learn them. The older I got and the more I grew up with their albums the more respect I had for Danny Carey. I still hold him as probably the best drummer I've heard- being able to make polyrhythms sound tasty is rare. Most of the time when I listen to something in a similar vein with odd meters or timing changes like animals as leaders or dream theater it feels like homework to dissect. This cover Estepario did took me back to that whole learning curve and gave me that desire to get back into it.

The singer cannot play any instrument, but he is a brilliant song writer, so the composition is left to the drummer Danny, bassist Justin Chancellor from London, and Adam Jones. These three musicians are geniuses in playing complex composition. Tool can be really bass heavy with Adam Jones playing some complex rift on his guitar. All Tool songs are very complex and long, but we love them.

I'm still waiting for him to cover a Dillinger Escape Plan song. A proper TDEP song, not a watered-down radio single. He's been avoiding covering them for years. I think he's afraid.

Pneuma has some serious Zeppelin vibes.

I think he got some bad information. Danny Carey never took drum lessons from Neil. He met Neil far after he was well established in TOOL. There’s a cool video of Danny Carey, Neil, and Stuart Copeland (drummer for) Police …doing a jam session together in Stuarts basement.
