The Fall Of History's Most Foolish Monarch

History Exposé

By turns tragic, misunderstood, power-hungry, and traumatized, King Richard II was one of the most notorious monarchs to sit on the English throne. Shakespeare may have immortalized Richard's villainous reign, but his true story is both darker and much more complicated than all that. Dust off that hollow crown and read these facts about Richard II.

The peasants revolt was not "infamous" for the masses of England. They were fighting against an oppressive feudal system and tax system as well as for the right for freedom of movement and employment; at a time when, following the Black Death, there were great opportunities for better paid employment if the rich toffs and nobility could be made to relent on feudal ownership of people.

The poor stripling had the curse of having 'greatness thrust upon him'

"Foolish" seems odd and inaccurate. R2 was a young, narcissistic, violent, absolute ruler in an environment of intrigue and murder.

Apparently starved him right above the bread ovens, which must have been horrendous. The smell of freshly baked bread is incredibly enticing, so imagine that when starving. I'd
have probably bled myself out, if I were him.

Narcissists don’t suffer; they make everyone else suffer

You left out arguably the most important part of the Pesants Revolt: His betrayal of Henry and the other nobles to save his skin. Needless to say, Henry never forgot that.

I've read that throughout history that there's A LOT of long, hard, torturous ways to go, but starvation is among the worst.

Anne of Bohemia was an important companion in his life. She was from a sophisticated proper royal family and well respected well feared well cultured kingdom from the continent. I guess through the decade being his wife, she was actually the perfect person controlling Richard from being out of place. She was the true hero in the story. ❤❤❤ but not many people talking about her.

If disease was so common among royalty, I can’t begin to imagine how horrific it must have been for the common folk.

"The Eagle and the Hart, The Tragedy of Richard II and Henry IV" (2024) by Helen Castor is a must read for anyone interested in this time period.

It is stories like these that have made me so fascinated with the history of the Plantagenet Family. Thanks for sharing this.

Medieval kings were more like mob bosses than modern-day monarchs.

I can think of at least 6 more foolish kings of England, probably more. King John, Charles Stewart, Edward II, WIlliam IV, Edward VIII, Mary, Stephen.

A superb documentary. Very factual and informative. No AI voiceover but a real human narrator and the background music is unobtrusive. I subscribed straight away.
