Remember when dessert at an American diner meant staring through the glass pie case, sharing a milkshake with two straws, or watching a towering banana split arrive at the table?
In this trip back to 1980s America, we’re revisiting 15 forgotten diner desserts that once appeared on menus at places like Denny’s, Howard Johnson’s, Friendly’s, Shoney’s, Big Boy, and countless local diners across the country.4
From tapioca pudding and coconut cream pie to root beer floats, hot fudge sundaes, banana splits, milkshakes, cheesecake, and pie à la mode, these classic desserts were about more than satisfying a sweet tooth. They were part of family dinners, Sunday drives, first dates, school celebrations, and those long evenings when nobody seemed to be in a hurry to leave the booth.
Some of these desserts are still around today—but somehow, they don’t feel quite the same.
Which forgotten diner dessert brings back the strongest memory for you? And who was sitting across the booth when you ordered it?
