I can't quote her exactly but a few days before my grandmother died she said she would never really be gone, that she brought up her boys to be kind and helpful and her sons all passed that to their kids and all of us will pass that on to our children. That her existence has touched the lives of people who never knew who she was.
She didn't need people to remember her name to live on, she needed them to remember her kindness.
That motivates me to be kind in a way that mainstream religion never has.
Part of why I loved the character Jayfeather was the way his (correct) understanding that starclan is neither omnipotent nor omniscient gets him into trouble with the other medicine cats, who tend to revere their ancestors as godlike. Also the dark forest cats recruiting and radicalizing living cats against the best interests of their own clans is such an excellent and age-appropriate metaphor to put in children’s books.
I think another interesting thing in their theology is that there are other theologies, but none of them conflict. Wandering ghosts, the sister's religion, the wildcat's, the Tribe of Endless Hunting.
I clicked on this video for the title including warrior cats, listened to Hanks atheistic worldview and then got caught off guard by the transition to warrior cats.
Erin Hunter, the team, is English, but that did not stop 11-year-old me from insisting that the warrior clans lived in the metropark near my house, which was its own kind of stubborn faith
Also, cats who are "gone" are not exactly vanished from existence either. They are not physically and spiritually there anymore. They cannot talk, think, feel or appear. But their essence lives on in nature. They are just kinda "everywhere"
"Mothwing- we don't need to get into it-" Hank Green I would LOVE for you to get into it. I would love to hear every thought you have about these cats, this is delightful
It's always great to see parents who are engaged in their kid's interests, and then there's Hank Green dropping a half hour video about the lore of the series he's reading with his son 🧡
