I’m 54 and virtually my whole life went well out of my way to explain myself because I dislike being misunderstood and loathe being accused of something I didn’t do, only to learn in the last few years how detrimental this was to every relationship/friendship professional and personal I have ever had. It isn’t a regret but knowing I sabotaged my entire adult life is a bitter pill to swallow. Especially when you realize people are more inclined to take advantage of you than be real/truthful
The way some people have manipulated my image and twisted my narrative—and the way I reacted to it, with anger, frustration, and the need to defend myself—ended up creating some of the most painful and damaging experiences of my life. Because that's exactly the trap that I was meant to fall into, so their plans could be executed. At times, it genuinely felt like my survival was at stake.
