The failure of the DA's office and the judge was to let Chris Watts take his guilty plea but without reciting facts and how he did it. Contrast this to the solving of the BTK case in the early 2000s. The judge handling that case required the defendant to recite what he did on each crime victim (each count). Here, CW should have been required to recite how he did and what he did to each victim to prove this case. Rourke stated in the post-sentencing hearing that his office pretty much agreed that Chris Watts would never tell the truth! The judge should have admonished the DA and defense attorney that this is not sufficient to sign the plea agreement for the file. We need the proofs of what happened. He knows them. If he won't say, I can't accept the plea agreement that has no factual basis to prove it.
I was at the military base waiting on my medical appointment when I saw his interview on their tv and something seemed off. His demeanor and the fact that he had no sense of urgency might have contributed to it.
Huddled up makes me think of Kate McCann describing Madeleine as compact such an odd way to describe a child it’s describing them more in terms of what you can do with them I feel
He was just in the idealization period with his affair once the reality set in of the situation he would have started to devalue her as well. Common for people with personality disorders.
Megabrain Watts would have been forever associated with a missing family mystery even if he had never been caught. Like the Ramseys and McCanns, he would never have had a moment where the scrutiny of the entire world wasn't intensely focused on him. He would have birthed an entire new genre on YouTube. The only thing that fascinates people more than a case like this is a case with a mysterious outcome. Conclusion: Chris is an absolute spanner who believed because his coddling parents believed his every lie, so would the world...
I couldn't believe when she asked him about the shirt, and he happily diverts straight to talking about how much he likes his shirt! Like he was so desperate to talk about anything else but his missing family. Very very strange.
He continually repeats that he wants them back. Isn’t that kind of an unsaid thing? Wouldn’t any husband want their wife and children back? It’s almost like he’s trying to convince people that he wants his family just in case they pick up on the fact he doesn’t. He overdramatizes how he is feeling as though he is referencing how it would look in a movie. Earth shattering, waiting for the kids to bust through the door and tackle him, it’s a ghost town, the house isn’t complete without them. I try to imagine my husband saying these things if this happened to him and it would be so bizarre to hear him speak that way.
I was thinking about CW's use of "huddled up somewhere", which you analyzed. Watts has a way of sort of garbling terms without realizing it. "Barrel rush" was one he used a lot, but it isn't actually a proper expression. I think it was a garbled mashup of "bum rush" and "barrel roll". When he said "huddled up somewhere" I think he was trying to insinuate that Shanann might have taken off with the kids and was in hiding somewhere. What he meant to say was "holed up somewhere", but he veered away from speaking of holes because that came too close to an admission of what he'd done. Then he reached for "hunkered down somewhere", i.e., in hiding and waiting for danger to pass, and he ended up with "huddled up". It was an unconscious slip of the tongue, reflecting the way they were the last time he saw them. Both in the back of the truck, and when he was dealing with their limp bodies after he killed them.
I love listening to your presentation and your insights on the mindset of the people you are studying Thank you for your work Greetings from Iceland 🇮🇸
I honestly thought he was one of the more obvious liars of all of the perpetrators I've observed. I know he was kind of falling apart at the seams, hence, you know, everything, but I think what shocks me the most is how much Chris Watts thinks it's going to Benefit him to talk when it really just confirmed his guilt to me.
I agree 100% about true crime exposing the ugly underbelly of the true crime community, creators and consumers. The Keiley Rhodni case was the same too. It turned me off true crime until just recently. I couldn't resist another TCRS analysis of the Watts case. You must be the authority on this case for anyone wanting more than just the "him evil/her perfect" level of depth.
I don't know that it would be duper's delight as much as a, "do they see through me kind of embarrassed smile". But perhaps that still falls under the category of, "duper's delight."
