This quiet walking tour takes you through the historic heart of Chieti Alta, from Piazza San Giustino and the old city gates to Corso Marrucino and the remains of ancient Roman Chieti.
Chieti has a history that goes back much further than its modern appearance suggests. The city grew from the territory of the ancient Marrucini, an Italic people who lived in this part of Abruzzo. Under Roman rule, Chieti became Teate Marrucinorum, an important city with a forum, temples, baths, an amphitheatre and a large Roman theatre.
Some of that ancient city is still part of modern Chieti. The Roman Theatre dates from the 1st century AD and was built into the natural slope of the hill. Its cavea was about 80 metres in diameter, making it a substantial public building for the ancient city.
But Chieti is not only Roman. Walking through the historic center, you move through many different layers of the city's history — from the medieval gates and churches to the elegant Corso Marrucino, which remains one of the main streets of Chieti Alta.
The city even has an unusual legend about its origins: according to tradition, Chieti was founded by the Greek hero Achilles, who named it Teate after his mother, Thetis. The story is legend rather than established history, but Achilles still appears on the city's coat of arms.
