Paul Dini turning Mr. Freeze from a laughing stock to one of the most sympathetic antagonists ever created is a masterstroke.

"Think of it, Batman. To never again walk on a summer's day with a hot wind in your face, and a warm hand to hold. Oh yes - I'd kill for that."

Mr Freeze in the DCAU is one the most tragic villians ever, at least in DC. He’s not doing what he does not for any financial gain, he’s doing this because he loves his wife. It’s all she has left.

Batman: “You got to get out of here, Freeze. The whole place is gonna fall…”
Mr. Freeze: “Leave me… you’re the only one who cares.”

Those are the words of a man who has nothing left to fear, because he’s lost everything else…

It’s genuinely really fucking impressive how the BTAS crew were able to transform Mr. Freeze from a goofy gimmick villain to being a genuinely tragic, compelling character with one of the best character arcs out of any Batman villain ever. Retcon so fucking good, DC literally decided to make it the norm for him within the Batman mythos.

I enjoy how Batman's villains can be said to reflect traits that Batman has, and I think with Mr Freeze it's the refusal to let go. The tragedy, as much as it's good for the people of Gotham is that arguably it's not good for Bruce Wayne to sacrifice himself for something which seems as remote as restoring Nora; but because Batman aids others, his compulsion and refusal to let go of Gotham being a constantly chaotic nightmare has a case of the ends justifying the means, whereas Freeze turns his potential to crime, debasing his potential to do good for scientific progress.

The way they wrote Mr freeze in dcau represents one of the reasons Batman tas so great.

Villains aren‘t written to be just antagonists to be beaten up. They are mostly written to be normal people that got hurt and broken by the world and became villains to cope with the pain.

It also makes them a mirror to Batman, as like them, he was hurt but chose to help others while they hurt others to fix their pain.
