I take out a SCAMP dinghy from Puffin's Trek in north Finistère, who are one of the few enterprises in the WORLD where you can hire a cruising dinghy. Although I have sailed one of these little twelve footers before, I have never slept overnight in one, and this was my first time doing that.
PUFFIN'S TREK
Where you can hire cruising Wanderers and Wayfarers, and not just a SCAMP.

The SCAMP dinghy
The name is acronym of Small Craft Advisor Magazine Project, hence the use of capital letters. The SCAMP is a wooden or fiberglass hulled balanced lug sailing dinghy. The hull is 11 ft 11 in (3.63 m) long, and capable of accommodating four persons on a daysail or one to two for overnighting or extended cruising. Craig Wagner and Josh Colvin, editors of Small Craft Advisor Magazine, teamed up with John Welsford, the noted New Zealand boat designer, to create what they call a "Mini Microcruiser" sailboat. Welsford considers it possibly the best boat he's ever designed.

AVEL DRO - my own boat.
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again., and to French registry - hence her Tricolour Ensign. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century – which explains her simple boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. Modern Ilurs are slightly different from mine however, as they have more built in buoyancy. The name Avel Dro is Breton: Avel = wind, Dro = to turn – so it means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
