“Hot Men Protect Bukhansan Mountain in Winter” (Aired January 12, 2013)

Bukhansan Mountain stretches across northern Seoul and Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province, boasting a vast expanse. Designated Korea's 15th national park in 1983, Bukhansan has long served as the "green lungs of the city." This week's "Video Album Mountain" features a hike and rescue training session with the Bukhansan Police Mountain Rescue Team.
In 2009, Bukhansan National Park was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the "National Park with the Most Visitors Per Unit Area." Due to its high number of visitors, accidents, both large and small, frequently occur during hiking and rock climbing. The Bukhansan Police Mountain Rescue Team was established to rescue people in such mountain accidents. Currently, three captains and five conscripted police officers from the Gangbuk Police Station in Seoul are active members. The first day's journey begins at the entrance to Bukhansanseong Fortress and follows the Uisang Ridge. This is a reconnaissance hike to ensure the safety of the trail, check for any casualties, and gain a more complete understanding of the vast terrain of Bukhansan. Climbing the slippery rocks, frozen by the accumulated snow, is no easy feat for the team members. Upon reaching the Uisang Ridge, the rugged granite peaks, a signature feature of Bukhansan, reveal themselves, offering panoramic views of Namsan and the entire Seoul skyline.

The next day, the team heads from Yeomchobong Peak to Baekundae, continuing their rock rescue training. As a mecca for rock climbing in the Seoul metropolitan area, Bukhansan is a constant source of rock climbing accidents. Repeated training is crucial for skilled rescue operations. Carrying 15-20kg of rescue equipment, they scale cliffs in the bitter winds, preparing for the unpredictable consequences of an accident. After training, exhausted, we stood atop Baekundae (836.5m), warmly greeted by the sunset over the city.

To protect the beautiful mountain and the well-being of hikers, the Bukhansan Police Mountain Rescue Team continues to navigate the rugged mountain paths. We witness the richness of Bukhansan's winter, enriched by their sweat and passion.
