CSX Sand Patch Grade SUMMERTIME Special
A look at Sand Patch Grade in the SUMMER months of 2025... filmed from June to the last day of Summer, September 21, 2025.
This is a look concentrating on the PINKERTON cut (former tunnel daylighted many years ago), the LOW GRADE line, as well as a peak of operations at the Cumberland Yards thrown in for your enhanced viewing pleasure of this special railroad line.
This production includes the now famous "one track, 2 trains" operation that is not standard, but does happen on Sand Patch Grade.. in fact..this time you can see 3 TRAINS on 2 tracks at the very same time!
This summer started off on a very sad note however... David Snyder passed away... David was the "Keeper" of the Mance Post Office for exactly 2 decades... 2004 to 2024.
There is a special tribute with photographs taken by his brother Roger at the end of this video... the photo right before the rainbow was David's last trip to Mance... a very melancholy visit. At this time the "cabin" (Post Office) was heated only by the wood stove shown in that photo.
David would keep coal burning in that stove till it was red hot... but realistically the cabin just would not hold heat so it was and is only habitable during the Spring, Summer and Fall months.
When David got the Post Office in 2004, the side yard was literally an industrial junk yard. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Snyder brothers for cleaning out the dump and working to preserve the Post Office for future generations.
Since 2024 local Amish are working to rebuild the Post Office using methods and materials that are historically appropriate to when it was built.
A history of the Post Office and its historical restoration is in the works, as the next video from Acme Cinematography once exterior restoration is complete sometime hopefully this fall.
As you can see some exterior changes are being made from its post - Post Office "residential" look, but these restorations line up with the ORIGINAL building as it was built in the 1860's. In particular the 2nd floor porch has been put back on that we believe was the original style of the building based on upstairs interior wall architectural findings. Stay tuned for that in the next episode!
In the meantime, enjoy this video! Please LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE so we can continue to bring you these productions at no cost to you. Comments are VERY VERY much appreciated!
thank you for watching!
