The Sting is a 1973 American caper film. Set in 1936, it involves a complicated plot by two professional grifters (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) to con a mob boss (Robert Shaw). The film was directed by George Roy Hill, who had directed Newman and Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). The screenplay by David S. Ward was inspired by real-life cons perpetrated by brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff and documented by David Maurer in his 1940 book The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man.

For fifty years my brother still says “you follow” when giving instructions or directions. Also love that they use black 22 as the rigged number on the roulette wheel as it was in Casablanca.

1 thing you have to remember is this movie was set in 1936....middle of the depression....so everybody was hustling....doing what ever to get by

The full joke by the burlesque comedian Leonard (played by real life funny man Leonard Barr): A farmer sneaks his rooster into a crowded movie theater by hiding it in his pants. When the lights go down, he lets the rooster poke its head out so it can watch the film. A woman notices and whispers to her friend, “Mabel, do you see what I see?” Mabel says, “So what? You’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.” Then, the first woman replies: “Yeah… but this one’s eating my popcorn.”

Several young pianists at my school were learning that simplified arrangement of "The Entertainer", the main theme in the movie, for several years after this movie came out. This movie was a big deal. My dad and his friends in the 70s would bring it up every once in a while and talk about it with a kind of respect for it as a great film.

Another great film about a con man (and a con girl) came out that same year: "Paper Moon" (1973). It's also set in 1930s Depression-era America, about a man-child duo scamming various people. It's great fun and at times comedic just like "The Sting."

45:44 Reactors hardly ever appreciate how funny it is when the Western Union employee returns to the half painted office. I'm so glad that you did. For me it's - together with the poker game, the beginning and the ending - one of the greatest scenes in the movie.
