Dimensions for bed frame timber
(Based on 21mm thick timber)

Outer frame
2x1 1@26"
2@25"
3x1 1@26"

Middle frame
2x1 1@23 3/8"
2@25"
3x1 1@25"

Inner frame
2x1 1@20 3/4"
3@25"

Back rail can be whatever size you need but it is made with 2 2x1 timber (L shaped)

Bed slats 9 @ 26 1/2"
2 sets of 600mm drawer runners

Dan, excellent design and instructions. Converting a Ford Transit Custom L2 H2 as a retirement project from August this year. Going to make two of these and get two roll up mattresses to suit.

Wow this is great. Gonna see if i think i can adapt it to my design as i got a small japanese kei van which im trying to make a put in place system in the back without any permenant modifications. Everything i haev thought of till now only can double the size when expanding but with this i can go further. Thanks

This is a great video, and so well designed! I’m desperate to find a solution to my small campervan, but can’t think how to adapt this. I want an l-shape, 1000mm x 1400mm (seat depth about 600mm, about 400mm high). I want this to extend to an 1800mm x 1000mm bed. Anyone with any advice would be much appreciated!

Edit: well, after weeks of thinking about this, I thought of a workable solution minutes after posting this! Basically have two of these, 500mm width at the rear. Both pull forward to make the full bed! Simples 😬

Hi Dan, I am on my 3rd version of your original design, I am well over 6 feet tall and 115 KG and i can confirm my bench to double bed does not creek squeak flex or bend, even after being crawled over and used for 3 years,
I am just about to make another for a van for the in-laws, so thanks for the time and effort you put into sharing your design,

I am still looking for a pop top roof or a collaborator to make a few that we emailed about a couple of years ago. get in touch if your situation has changed. Cheers Ed.

how would I calculate what size drawer runners id need when scaling this up to the dimensions of my needs? or am I overthinking this and its just pick a number slightly shorter than the frame depth
