You survived the first year without your husband. You made it through the first birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. So why can the second year of widowhood sometimes feel even harder?

Some of my most difficult days came during the second—and even third—year after my husband died. When grief seemed to be getting worse instead of better, I wondered whether something was wrong with me.

In this video, I’m sharing six reasons the second year as a widow can feel harder than the first. Understanding what may be happening can help you stop judging your grief and begin offering yourself the time and grace you need. And one of these reasons may be adding weight to your grief without you even realizing it.

A harder second year doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going backward or grieving incorrectly. It may mean your mind and heart are processing parts of the loss they couldn’t carry all at once.

Did the second year feel harder for you? Or, if you’re in it now, what has surprised you most about this season of grief? Please share in the comments. Your experience may help another widow realize she isn’t the only one who feels this way.
